February Snowfalls 2/10-2/12, Part III & IV

Geos

Recommended Posts

Fraser outflow eased up on Sunday, but never totally went away. Less gusty at present, but sustained winds still in the 20s. Now that the snow is finally falling here, drifts are piling up quickly, particularly in the usual north Whatcom drift zones.

Total accumulations aren't all that impressive, but conditions are still pretty brutal.

24° with an 8° wind-chill.

It also stings a little less that this month is going to end up as a decent winter weather month down here (6.1" at PDX), and potentially top 10 cold for February. December 1996 was pretty much a torch down here aside from a gorge ice storm and a 1" snow event a couple days after Christmas which was sandwiched between days in the upper 50s.

So regionally I think this month already blows away December 1996.

Definitely. December 1996 had extra sting to it because of the time of year too. Was originally forecast to be a white Christmas in Portland with highs in the mid-20s.

Hard to tell, but NOW it looks like Staleys Junction at 250 feet or so has snow falling on the cam.

Too bad this is happening right as solar heating is really getting underway. If this had happened 12 hours ago something like what the NAM and HRRRRRR were showing might have actually panned out.

For those curious - NOAA has officially verified the new US 24 hour rainfall record, a 49.69" total on April 14-15 last year in Hawaii.

I was there. Can confirm, it was terrifying. Came home 5 days early and paid $250 to do so.

Per cams it just switched to wet snow at Murphy Hill (650') between Salem and Lincoln City.

I thought Murphy was 750'

I lived in Sheridan/Willamina for years  and I remember going over that pass to the beach regularly like most people headed to Lincoln City but I also have a terrible memory...I think the Hwy 22 coast range pass is closer to 650 feet as the divide between the Little Nestucca and Yamhill watershed is a bit lower than the one between the Yamhill and the Salmon River.

Edit: says 660ft

I swear the summit sign is wrong and doesn't say 660.

Crazy flooding in scappoose and St. Helens! I’ve never witnessed such flooding here in 30 years. Every other back road has water rushing across it. Highways have standing water in many places too.

Mudslides soon to follow if not already in progress...yikes

This is when we find out how fragile our network of roads are as they collapse and fail! I’ll never forget trying to get back to Portland from Seattle in 1996 (The Flood) since I-5 what shut down. Had to head down to the beach to 101 and head for 26 back to Portland. Roads were gone everywhere and large pieces missing as well. One of the most memorable scary vulnerable drives in my life!

this is nothing like the 96’ floods because it really isn’t effecting the major rivers, they are all real low. Plus the moisture is focused so much on the downstream side of the Columbia and basically none of the willamette. Lots of snowmelt in nw Oregon tho

For as much heat as the Portland NWS takes for their metro area forecasts, their forecasts for outlying areas are even worse. Currently under a winter storm warning which was originally for 8-15" of snow, then downgraded to 6-12", and it is very likely if I get any snow it will be after the warning expires this evening. They probably bust on warnings like this 1-2 times a year on average, and then don't issue warnings about half the time I get 6"+ snow events, sometimes not even advisories...Not that it really matters, but just pointing out, as bad as they are in the metro area, they look like Mark Nelsen there compared to their forecasts for other areas.

I made a post about that last night (I know everything gets buried so quick these days!). The 7 straight are a February record.

I did a quick skim of the records and the closest I could find was five consecutive the first five days of February 1989.

Nice! Yeah, I must have missed it.

Looking back even at old records you realize how hard it is to string together that many days sub-40 in February. Even consistently cold months like 1956 usually snuck a 41 or something in there during the longer stretches of chilly weather.

It's surprisingly hard. Both 1949 (17 days) and 1950 (13 days) ended their long runs on Feb. 5th. The previous monthly record was actually 6 days in 2014.

Just noticed that Pendleton, OR has received 21.3" of snow so far this month. Their snow records at the downtown station are terribly incomplete and the airport records only go back to 2003, but there is now February where more was recorded...

Hopefully it will pick up, but snowfall totals in the Oregon Cascades have been pretty lame over the past 24 hours. This has certainly not turned into the massive snow dump we were expecting due to the front stalling off to the west.

Here are the 24 hour snowfall totals. Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of this event...

Just popped up to 32.5F for the first time. Been in the snow shadow for most of the night so only picked up about 0.25" today. Puts my total at 11" for the event which is roughly equivalent with 2011. Definitely amazing, but no comparison to the 28" in 2008 I received.

It's surprisingly hard. Both 1949 (17 days) and 1950 (13 days) ended their long runs on Feb. 5th. The previous monthly record was actually 6 days in 2014.

Next one to watch will be sub-50 highs there. They got dangerously close this morning, but I don’t see another slam dunk chance after that for at least the next 5-7 days.
