February Snowfalls 2/10-2/12, Part III & IV

For what its worth

- models are not 100% on the direction of a low, even hours out

- we have seen shifts of 20-50 miles a day before

- mixing at all levels is always difficult to model and in my experience has either been overdone or underdone

- as much as some have been playing up the rain factor - sleet and freezing rain might be more likely if cold is stubborn or low a little further south

- I-90 north still will most likely add to their snow totals in most scenarios

- still cold after this and there are still chances to be had to add

- it can still snow at sea level in March

- the last time we had a Feb this snowy was 1949...

April 2008 would like a word with you.

What if this pattern stays until July!!! We could have a year round snow pack this year!!!!!

Just need to have a very large meteor impact earth...that should give us a snowy July!

There is a chance I'll have close to 30 inches of snow here by late tomorrow night. That's the deepest since 96 when there was 34 to 38 inches. Crazy.

Good thing you brought your plow truck home!

Cold air flowing back into Puget Lowland.

Anacortes down to 20 degrees with a NE wind gusting to 25 mph. An 11 degree drop in the last 3 hours.

https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KWAANACO17#history

Looks like the low tracked right over Mt. Vernon, and the cold air is spilling back in from the North West of there. It will be very interesting to see how far South down the Sound this cold air is able to make it tonight. Huge implications for tomorrow's forecast.

It's going to come down to how cold the east winds are tomorrow for King County.  Obviously the strength of this first disturbance really wrecked havoc on our store of cold air.  It is 12 on Stampeded Pass and 19 in Lester so the outflow could be pretty cold tomorrow.  Just wish the stupid thing today could have worked out better here.  At least I got an inch.

Seems like those temps up north are colder than the original arctic outflow event on Friday.

It does appear the north interior may be colder than it was expected to be tonight.

Really easy to track the cold air using the Wundermap.

20 degrees with a NE wind in Anacortes and 27 with a SW wind in Mt. Vernon 15 miles East of there.

My gut feeling is this will be a big snow event for the sound with 4-12 inches common from tacoma north. Probable 12-20 on the kitsap peninsula.

I hope you're right.  The combo of getting screwed today and the awful GFS run really pissed me off earlier.

They were sitting at 32 at 10 PM.

I'm getting graupel here of all things and the temp has dropped below freezing.  The cold is making a quick comeback.

Things were getting a bit drippy earlier, but now it has refrozen.  North winds have made it to Auburn.  I feel much better about our chances now.  The cold air getting wiped out earlier really freaked me out.  I want this one!

Tonight sure has been bizarre. At least the super cold air is so close by . It has already reacquainted itself here firmly in the last hour ;) quite the tease tonight

For sure.  I was D**n near throwing things an hour ago.  Now it's snowing and frozen.

How much snow did you get tonight? Got 3" here a couple miles East of you.

I noticed Everett pulled off a 32/13 day today. Impressive.

24F here. Maybe I'll be right on the boundary of the cold air like I was in 2012 I think...It snowed for a day straight and it came out to 2.00" of liquid water equivalent. Unfortunately it was also 33F outside and accumulated to a grand total of 2" of snow.

On the other hand I would have to get precipitation to have that happen and the NAM and the Icon have now trended drier with the NAM saying no snow up here at all.

Here's the 3km Nam. Whether we should put any stock in it is another issue.

This cold air coming in from the north is a really big deal.  Tomorrow the easterly outflow will act like a brick wall keeping the southerly winds from making it past the King / Pierce County line.  That will protect all of the cold air that flows in tonight from being scoured out.

See this kind of thing will never occur in the Willamette Valley ever again. It’s nice that your climate is still capable of it.

You had an epic event in Feb 2014.  We largely missed out on that.
