National Winter Temperature Maps...Post Mortem

To say the least most professional mets got their arses handed to them when all was said and done this winter.  The Weatherbell forecast for example was about 180 degrees out of phase compared to how things ultimately worked out.  One of the more surprising aspects is how the SE and Central Atlantic regions were never able to get the sustained cold anomalies that many expected.  Then, of course, the fact that February was able to completely offset the warm anomalies for the NW quarter of the country.  This goes to show that sometimes surprising outcomes are in favor of the NW, even though it doesn't seem like it sometimes.

Below are the temperature anomaly maps for February and for the entire winter.  To me it's nice to see a temperature anomaly map like February in a winter month other than December.  This proves that a great January still has to be possible.

On an unrelated note.  It's obvious they need to break that one huge climate zone in Idaho into a northern a southern region.  That zone always causes maps from winters like this one to have a really weird look to them.

Yeah, southern Idaho did not have a notably cold February. Northern Idaho did.
