Least favorite winter?

What is your least favorite winter?

I would say 2012-2013. I don’t remember a single event in that year that was actually noteworthy. This latest winter is also up there with how annoying and bait-and-switching it was, imagine getting screwed over twice to areas just north and south. So yeah, 2012-2013 for being boring, and 2018-2019 for being the unluckiest winter.

It would be 2017-2018. Huge fires all December, the biggest one being the Thomas Fire, and only one major storm in early January, which helped to finally put out the fires, but caused deadly mudslides in the same area. The hills never got green and it was so warm that fall leaves were still on the trees in mid February. A cold snap in late February finally helped to get rid of the leaves, but also caused a very late spring bloom (new leaves did not start growing until the middle of April).

For some areas, such as Orange County, it was the driest winter on record.

Excellent question.  There are a few that come to mind.

1980-81 - A horrific winter for nearly all lowland locations and there was no apparent reason for it from an ENSO perspective or any other negative factor we know of.

1991-92 - Would hands down be the worst if it weren't for the impressive October cold wave.  Even with that it was probably the worst I've seen.

1999-2000 - A putrid La Nina winter at least for the Puget Sound region.

2002-03 - Horrendous except for the October / early November cold snap and a little bit of snow in March.

Can't find any significant events that year either. Though 2003-2004 was great for some just a year after.

2011/12. Nickeled and dimed our way to 2.5” of snow in a sea of hot, dry west winds. And the summer that followed..fuuuck.

2012/13 was almost as bad, but hurricane Sandy and the late March/April snows made it interesting.

Seems logical.

It’s more the fact that it was so close. 2014-2015 never even came close to giving us anything after November, there was little hope. And it gave me like 5 windstorms. This winter was very taunting with how everything went around us.

Not as well familiar with the lowlands south of Washington this winter season, but I can say most of the stretch of the higher elevations had a solid one this time.

And averaging out the last roughly 4 winters is pretty decent in many areas. For me, '17-'18 was not that great for K-Falls. But everything before and after that one was good stuff.

Can you really compare what we got to what other lowland areas in the PNW received?

So what. No idea how that makes it the worst winter ever. Seems ridiculously whiny considering how many actual bad ones we have seen compared to that.

It’s not the worst, it’s my least favorite. Big difference there. This one was infuriatingly slighting. So much potential completely squandered, reduced to the few weak snow events we ended up with. Compared to what models were showing mere days before it was incredible how unlucky this one was.

Oh, I think I see.  You're drawing a distinction between the worst winter statistically, and the winter that made you feel the worst relative to expectations.

For me, that would have to be 2015-16 in SoCal.  Raging Niño had visions of 1968-69, 1972-73, and 1997-98 dancing in my head, and it turned out to be yet another desiccated blowtorch in a whole series of them.

Would be nice to have one of the first 2 of those Ninos as an analog for 19-20, but we are now due for a dud winter and we have just had a 1 in 50 chance snow event in Feb so I highly doubt we get one of those.

Okay. I'm going to make a more calm response to this thread. 2018-19 was not a very good winter in Eastern Washington County, but it was far from the worst the area has ever had.

The worst might be 1976-77. Very little precipitation throughout the entire winter and it kickstarted one of the worst droughts in Portland history. Just cold and dry, probably with low humidity and east winds, for most of that winter. January and March were too cold as well. There wasn't much in the way of snow either.

2018-19 is definitely on the list from a backyard perspective. Almost completely missing 12"+ lowland events by less than 100 miles to the north and south (and by 20 miles to the east in the case of 2/9) is a pretty unprecedented stroke of bad luck for this area.

2007-08 and 1996-97 are similar in that the weather was objectively wintrier than some but subjectively was pretty hard to stomach.

You done more than enough complaining for everyone around PDX this last winter, no need for the continuous lecture.

If my lecture makes sure that no one north of PDX (or even south) will be mad next year, so be it.

2001-02, 2006-07, 2013-14, 2017-18. All were very, pathetically dry winters here in Southern California with persistent high pressure and very little actual rain. All four of them also placed somewhere very high on the region's lists for driest winter on record (for most Southern California locations, 2006-07 was the driest in recorded history).

2015-16 was very disappointing as Eujunga pointed out. It was the first strong El Nino to completely flop for Southern California (at least since 1950), whereas the big El Nino winters of 1972-73, 1982-83, and 1997-98 were all historic.

Yeah, 1972/73 was a weird winter here. Plenty of cold, but the storm track sucked donkey balls.

Ended up with a trace of snow at DCA. Glad I wasn’t alive for that catastrophe.

For me it would be Winter 2001-02 in the Southern California mountains.  Driest winter at San Diego AP, as they only recorded only 3.02 inches of rain.  There have been drier years for LA/Orange County that followed this one(2006-07, 2017-18). There have been longer drought periods statewide(2014-2018), but no other drought period can match the amount of bark beetle devastation that occurred during this time.  Areas such as Julian and Lake Arrowhead were absolutely ravaged to be sure.  Palomar Mountain had a massive die-off of White Firs near the Observatory.  I even saw areas of Anza Borrego where Pinyons and even Junipers were dying in good numbers, as well as mesquite die-offs in the Borrego Valley!  These conditions would lead to the devastating 2003 Firestorms.
