April 2023 Observations and Disussion

Not a drop is expected for at least 2 weeks.  Temps near 70, slowly dropping into the 50's (at least as of this forecast locally.

I guess I'll live vicariously through any rain in the forum.  Not good for us when it's this dry this time of year.

Yesterday the official high of 68 was reached at 1AM and the low of 38 was reached at 11PM. Officially there was 0.12” of rain fall. There was just 3% of possible sunshine yesterday. The overnight low and current temperature here in MBY was 33 there is a trace of snow on the ground and the total precipitation here in MBY as of 6:45 was 0.33” For today the average H/L is 59/38 the record high of 84 was recorded in 1976 and the record low of 24 was set in 1983.

After our 6 days of April summer, it is now back to winter. There is a trace of snow here on the grass and more so on the roofs of houses and the tops of cars. It will be cold today and tomorrow then a warm up before turning cold again for next weekend. Once again it is 33 with light snow falling here at the current time.

The grass was beginning to whiten a bit late last night, but it was already melted by the time I woke up this morning.  I'll just record a couple tenths in my spreadsheet.

Duluth, MN is likely to surpass their record setting seasonal snowfall of 135.4" that fell back in 1995-96.  They are just 0.3" away from tying it and the next storm dialing up later this week will push them over the top!  Pretty remarkable.

We picked up 0.22" of much needed rain overnight here in East Nantmeal. Temperatures have continued to fall this morning since sunrise as a cold front passed through earlier this AM. Clouds will give way to sun this afternoon with temps at just about normal for mid April in the low to mid 60's. Below normal temps should remain through Wednesday with temps much of the time remaining in the 50's with near 60 by Wednesday. Much warmer to close out the week and with shower chances arriving by the weekend.

Yesterday the official H/L at Grand Rapids was 39/32. That 39 was reached just after midnight so much of the day was in the mid 30’s and snow fall off and on all day long. There was 0.19” of precipitation of that .04” was snow fall. There was just 1% of sunshine.

Yesterday’s official high of 39 was the 5th coldest high for any April 17th the snow fall of 0.4” was the 3rd snowiest for the date. And after the record warmth of the week before it felt just that much colder.

For today the average H/L is 59/38 the record high of 86 was set in 1977,2002 and 2004. The record low of 22 was set in 1926 and 1983. The record snow fall of 3” fell in 1912. Last year it was a cold 37/32 and 0.3” of snow fell. That 37 was the 2nd coldest high for any April 18 so it was cold at this time last year as well. The overnight low here in MBY was 31 and at the current time it is 32 and there is a trace of snow on the ground.

Typical up and down temps with spring weather. Well below normal temps today with highs struggling to reach the low to mid 50's. But a quick warmup to the 80's by Friday before a change back to well below normal by the end of the weekend into next week. Also a good chance of some rain starting Saturday.

ORD picked up a "stat padding" 0.4" of snow yesterday and that will be enough to crack the 20" mark for the season!  LOL...the season total is now a whopping (sarc) 20.1"

Looking back at this GL's storm, I'm dumbfounded how much fell in such a tight location across W Wisco...nearly 2 Feet of snow and gauging from the vid's on social media, it appears it was a fluffier snow and not that heavy/wet and dense snow.

Tom, just a heads up. The Spring Equinox is in March and not April.

Doh!  Where they heck I got that from I have no idea.  Maybe it was too early in the morning and just started my coffee.  Geeze, thanks for this bud....from all the winter maps my mind was thinking something else at the time.  For some reason, I had 4/20 on my mind...LOL, and no, I don't smoke!  It's actually an important date for my business calendar and just got legit mixed up.

The official H/L yesterday at Grand Rapids was 47/31 there was a trace of snow fall and the day started with a trace of snow on the ground. There was 42% of possible sunshine. The overnight low here in MBY was 29. The current temperature is 31 with cloudy skies.

For today the average H/L is 59/39 the record high of 82 was set in 1985 the record low of 19 was set way back in 1897. The record snow fall amount of 1.0” fell in 1953. Snow fall in now becoming rather rare. There has only been 4 years with measurable snow fall on this date and only 10 years with a trace or more.

There will be a warm front moving thru today and with that there is a chance of some rain and thunder. Tomorrow there should be a brief warm up into maybe the upper 70’s before another big cool down for the end of the week and the start of next week and there is a chance of rain and yes snow for the week end

Some of the lower spots across the county saw sub-freezing temps this AM. Here in East Nantmeal we made it down to 33.4 degrees. Our last freezing morning was on April 9th...could that one and today in lower spots be our last such reading until October or November? I will post growing season stats later. We should warm back to about normal levels this afternoon (low 60's) before a big warm up to close the week. Temps on Friday could touch the mid-80's before showers arrive Saturday night and a return to cooler weather next week.
Records for today: High 92 (1976) / Low 24 (1905) / Rain 2.05" (1943) / Snow 4.2" (1983)

@Andie @OKwx2k4 @Iceresistance ....once the calendar flips to the Spring Equinox, it appears that a dominant NW Flow aloft shall produce a lot of precip chances as we close out the 2nd half of April and open up May.

Yup. High of 81 today. Thunderstorms. Possible hail as a dry line moves across Texas/Okla.
They’re forecasting hail but the worst of it may be north.  Oklahoma often gets the worst of systems like this. We’ll find out in a few hours.

No rain at my place for April so far, pretty weird. At least its mostly been reasonable weather otherwise. Probably going to miss out on the severe potential the next two days too.

Models do look wetter to close out the month but I've seen that story already this month...we will see.

Where did all the Omaha & Lincoln posters go?  A couple rounds of big storms have moved through southeast Nebraska over the last few days, but there has not been a single post from anyone over there.

All rain and severe weather missed my area again just off to the Southeast.  It is a several year long broken record at this point.  Things were looking good with the snow we got this winter, but now it has dried out, and the drought rages on.  Have to hope El Nino is kind to parts of the Central Plains.

It'll start to fire up as we near the later part of this month, but esp MAY, this could be a big month for the central Plains.

A decent cell just passed through the Cedar Rapids area, dropping hail (half to one inch size).  Once again, I was on the edge and only got a bit of rain.
