August 2019 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Even if we don’t get a thunder and lightning show here tonight we should be able to pick up some rain still. Despite getting 0.99” in July we’re still pretty far behind for the year in rainfall here. Currently at 13.45” total we average about 22” by this time in the year.

High temp here was 73 today.

Would love this cell in Lane and Douglas Counties to intensify but it's not gonna get there.

Looks like the northern edges of the storms are at about the Columbia river now. Radar in WA still indicates some showers around mainly south WA cascades and south sound/interior.

Just a boring cloudy day around here. Sun did make an appearance this afternoon at the Fair, but back at home it’s been cloudy.

Currently 62 degrees. Brrrrr.

can see lots of lightning here from North Tacoma been quite the show. Unfortunately wildfires are now going to be a problem.

Lots of thunder here, which is strange considering the heavier storms are over the Gorge right now.

Looks like the south sound should get quite the show. Doubtful anything makes it this far northwest, as is pretty typical.

been the best night thunderstorm show I’ve seen since July 2012 so far. Hundreds of strikes so far and moving our way.

Pretty good storm going here tonight.  Many lightning flashes and some heavy rain.

I was going to post a couple of days ago the WRF was looking very favorable for thunder, but I never got to it.

Interestingly one of the best lightning shows I ever saw was when my parents and I were staying in a motel in Nanaimo in probably the late 1970s or thereabouts.  I still remember it!

Literally the least likely place in Canada to experience a thunderstorm. Your odds double or even triple once you get to the mainland around Vancouver or the Fraser valley

I remember a pretty impressive event in August 1998 living up in Nanoose (just north of Nanaimo). The island certainly is capable of getting storms but outside of a few geographically favored areas they can be few and far between. I've seen far less since I've lived in Victoria.

It seems like the late 90s had quite a bit of convection over the Cascades. I remember a lot more storms back then than we've had the past few years. Seemed like every time we went camping in Central and Eastern Oregon we would get pummeled with storms at night.

Victoria downtown is probably worse than Nanaimo for storms, I have to imagine that's measured at the airport. Nanoose-Parksville do better than places further south as storms will be triggered off the central island mountains, intensify, then roll into the Strait. Nanaimo is often too far south to catch that, but you can kind of see it in the Courtney ranking there. Of course Nanaimo airport isn't really representative of Nanaimo either, I've seen a fair number of cells move off Mount Benson and hit Nanaimo proper.

Most impressive convective event I've seen here was the one in early September 2013. We picked up about 3.5" of rain with that event.

Earlier I just had vicinity rumbles (2-3pm). I didn't even turn on my cameras once the whole day. Heard central OR got slammed and a few people had some of their biggest thunderstorms in recent memory. Can't say I had anything severe level since Aug 2017.

But it looks like a secondary round of t'storms could hit me very soon, maybe even while I'm sleeping. Latest radar images show these cells slowly progressing eastward as the night goes on. So far this year I haven't had any t'storms occur between 12am to 12pm, so any morning storms would be my first for 2019.

Nocturnal convection used to be quite a normal thing in the 90's. It seems since I've came here, I can go a solid 2-3 years at a time and not see one early AM storm wake me up in Klamath Falls, despite having a handful of quite active thunderstorm seasons.

I don't see how that's possible. I know eugene is one of the worst places on the planet for storms, but I've heard at least a hundred or more this year alone. However, like an idiot I always go outside to soak it in.

Still some big boomers and flashes going on in my vicinity. Has to have been hundreds of strikes visible from my neighborhood from roughly 9pm til now. Really cool t-storm outbreak but only 0.01” of rain at my house so far. Seems we’re on the northern fringe of the precip. Overall great night got some good videos.
