westMJim
You know here in west Michigan there has been a lot of talk about how little snow that has fallen this winter season. Well yes compared to the averages for our area it has been much less than average but for locations at our latitude this winter has been very much a average year for total snow fall. Grand Rapids officially at the airport is at latitude 42.8825 (I live at 43.0128) and officially recorded 48.5” of snow fall. Well to our west at Madison latitude 43.1406 their 30 year average snow fall is 50.9” at Milwaukee latitude 42.9550 their average snow fall is just 46.9” and to our east at Port Huron at latitude 42.9750 their average snow fall is just 37.1” so yes Grand Rapids is well below average for snow fall this year but is still in line with other locations at our latitude. snowstorm83
Currently tied at #5 least snowiest winter on record (11.3") and it's not unreasonable to think that there won't be any more measurable snow for the rest of the season. Thanks amigo! I am still shocked. Hard to believe. That goes to show you how wacky weather can be. I had AN temps almost most of the Winter season and managed to be AN in snowfall. Crazy stuff. As you say, "The Detroit Snow Magnet" worked 2 Quote Snowfall for Winter 2023 -24 for Metro Detroit Area Oct 2023: 0.2" AN Nov 2023: 2.2" AN Dec 2023: 0.5" BN Insane! Tom
As a whole, the nation was about 110% of normal in the snowfall dept and primarily focused in the inter-mountain west. Take a look at the Euro's Sept run for the winter and what it actually turned out to be. It really nailed the AN snowfall in the Rockies this year and the lackluster season across the Sierra Mountain range. Sept's run below... It's wild how accurate the actual results turned out over a small part of the KS/MO region and parts of NE. The Upper MW turned out to be fairly accurate as well, and of course, the abysmal season for the lower lakes, OHV and East Coast.
mlgamer
Topeka(TOP) Feb: 2.7" Season: 11.7" (74% of normal 15.9" as of 3/1). Because annual snowfall is relative to where a person lives, here is the scale I personally use to categorize my seasonal totals along with the past 24 yrs breakdown: 10-20" Meh (11)20-30" Pretty good (3)30-40" Very good (2)>40" Epic! (1) As you can see, Awful and Meh have ruled the last 24 yrs here. 3 Quote 23-24 seasonal snow total: 17.8" (as of 3/9/24)
westMJim
The mean meteorological winter temperatures were well above average across west Michigan and that keep the lake effect snow fall down. The 3 month mean at Grand Rapids was 30.7° At Muskegon it was warmer still at 31.4° and to the east at Lansing it was 30.0° all were well above average. For meteorological winter the snow fall was 41.7” at Grand Rapids for the winter season so far it is 48.7” at Muskegon the meteorological winter snow fall was just 39.4” and for the season they are now at 50.3” and to our east at Lansing the meteorological winter snow fall was 36.9” and for the season they are at 42.7” While Muskegon and Grand Rapids are much below average in the snow fall department Lansing is near average. I thought I'd be lacking in the LES dept as well, but surprisingly I'm at 27% (I consider ~25% normal). Ofc, I can't really parse lake enhancement from pure LES in those events that contain both so an event on the same day is weighted as mostly Lehs/LES or mostly synoptic. I simply divide between obvious synoptic snow, and anything that is >50% helped by the lake due to a cold NW flow component like the surprise Arctic CF the week before Christmas for instance. Were it not for that 2.5", my LES percent would've been closer to 20% and below avg here as well. 1 Quote Winter 2023-24 Snow Total = 52.8" (89% Normal Season) Largest Storm: 12" (1/12-13) Oct: 0.1 Nov: 2.9 Dec: 7.5 Jan: 31.7 Feb: 6.0 Mar: 4.1 Apr: 0.0 Avg = 59.2" (Harrison): 2023-24 = xx.x" Avg = 45.0" (KDTW): 2022-23 = 33.5" 2021-22 = 35.6" Avg = 49.7" (KRMY): 2020-21 = 36.2" 2019-20 = 48.0" 2018-19 = 56.1" 2017-18 = 68.3" 2016-17 = 52" 2015-16 = 57.4" 2014-15 = 55.3" 2013-14 = 100.6" (coldest & snowiest in the modern record!) 2012-13 = 47.2" 2011-12 = 43.7" Legit Blizzards (high winds and dbl digit snows): Feb 2011, Dec 2009, Jan 2005, Dec 2000, Jan 1999, Mar 1998, Nov 1989, Jan 1982, Jan 1978, Jan 1977, Apr 1975, Mar 1973, Jan 1967, Feb 1965, Jan 1918
Beltrami Island
As a whole, the nation was about 110% of normal in the snowfall dept and primarily focused in the inter-mountain west. Where do you get 110% from? I don't even understand how that can be calculated for the entire nation.I am curious what the second map looked like for 2016-2017, especially for the west. Most of that map would be dark green for the west.
