BTW one more county to the north Lapeer county has a average of 47.5"

Being a native of Genesee county, there has always been that significant gradient between the N burbs of Detroit, and the next tier of counties north.

With Grand Rapids official 3.6” of snow fall yesterday Grand Rapids is now at 10.1” for February. That is above average for the first 9 days of February. There is a very good chance that February will end up with above average snow fall for the whole month. Since December 1st Grand Rapids has now had 35.9” of snow fall and for the season GRR is now at 42.7” In the last 30 years the lowest seasonal total are 51.2” in the winter of 2011/12. 54.5” in 1999/00 and 59.8” in 1997/98. The most snow fall at GRR in the last 30 years has been 116.0” in 2013/14. 107.0” in 2007/08. 105.2” in 2001/02 with 104.9” in 2008/09 just behind that. So far this February is still much warmer than average with a mean of 30.2° and that is a departure of +5.2°

2.1" fell yesterday. Puts me at 35.0" for the season.

If it were not for the 2 big snowstorms I had: 1. Vet Day snowstorm (12.8") and 2. January 17-18th (11.0"), my totals would have been at 11.2"

Hey all!  Here's my updated snow totals organized to highlight what a garbage winter it has become for MBY:

Oct 30 - Dec 15 (47 days):  6.3"    (*includes 4.4" on Dec 14)

Dec 16 - Feb 10 (57 days):  2.7"

Total: 9.0"  (1981-2010 seasonal normal: 17.8")

So a fairly decent start through Dec 15 turned into next to nothing as we moved into the heart of winter.

I saw there was snow down in the north Atlanta suburbs a few days ago and they've now had more snow than Philly and D.C. this winter

Wow..didn't know that. Thanks for that info. That is just crazy. Goes to show you how deranged this Winter has been.

Took in an even 4 inches yesterday bringing me to 23.5 inches for the season and 5 inches over my season average. Fingers crossed that I can keep adding to my total, lets see what the 21st has in store.

Awesome.... ;)

As for the 21st, it will be the usual..slopfest to rain near 40F and then, turning colder behind the storm.

Story of this pathetic Winter. Think about it, had i not received those 2 big snowstorms totals, right now, I would have been at 12 or 14 inches of snow. Heck, you woulda had more snow than my area.

Officially yesterday Grand Rapids recorded 1.7” of snow fall that brings February to 13.8” (the 30 year average for a 28 day February is 14.8” so GR needs just one more inch to be average for the month) For meteorological winter GR now has 39.6” and for the season 46.4” As of yesterday at 7 AM GRR reported 2” of snow on the ground. Today I have 2.5” on the ground. Grand Rapids has a chance of making the average snow fall for February, no chance of making average snow fall for meteorological winter.  And would need a lot of snow (over 30”) in March and  April to reach the average for the season. The mean temperature so far for February at GRR is 27.0 and that is still +1.7 for the month as of this date. February will be the coldest month of the winter and depending on how March plays out could be the coldest of the winter season.

Kept getting woke up by plows all night! First time in 11 days. And after this surprise storm, I'm slowly closing the hefty lead you had after Vet's Day. I am now 120% of avg for the month of February with more than 1/3 of the month to go. Kudos to Tom for boldly calling for a much snowier stretch this month around here. Almost as much as D&J combined. While not a great winter or even month for snow depth, we've managed to keep a depth of 2+ inches the past 14 days (and counting).

It was back to reality, that's for sure. Also, a surprise storm indeed. My snowfall did not switch to rain at all. Remained all snow. Icon nailed it.

I wouldn't be surprised if this Winter ends up to be near average snowfall or above.

The official snow fall at the airport yesterday was 1.9” while here at my house there was just a trace. And this morning the depth at the airport was reported as 1” while here at my house there is NO snow on the ground just the old snow piles. Now for the official readings for Grand Rapids are for February 15.9” for meteorological winter 41.7” and for the 2019/20 season 47.5”

You know here in west Michigan there has been a lot of talk about how little snow that has fallen this winter season. Well yes compared to the averages for our area it has been much less than average but for locations at our latitude this winter has been very much a average year for total snow fall. Grand Rapids officially at the airport is at latitude 42.8825 (I live at 43.0128) and officially recorded 48.5” of snow fall. Well to our west at Madison latitude 43.1406 their 30 year average snow fall is 50.9” at Milwaukee latitude 42.9550 their average snow fall is just 46.9” and to our east at Port Huron at latitude 42.9750 their average snow fall is just 37.1” so yes Grand Rapids is well below average for snow fall this year but is still in line with other locations at our latitude.

I took the snow map from the Madison Climatology Office and removed the early Halloween snow we got from the chart (Pink line). It really put into perspective how poor this winter was. It was basically very slow to start, with things increasing faster than normal to fall below average.

This winter here was definitely a stat padder, completely under-performed in useable, enjoyable snow but ended up above average for the year.

Currently tied at #5 least snowiest winter on record (11.3") and it's not unreasonable to think that there won't be any more measurable snow for the rest of the season. At least next winter can only be better, as we came into this year knowing it had to be worse. Just didn't think it would be this bad.

Congrats bud! Wow, you're actually above avg for the season total. So, while mild during DJF you've had the storm magnet going for ya. It's a rare scenario since Detroit/SEMI does not normally do very well in the snow dept during mild winters. Thus this one has bucked the trend and pre-season calls for your region to be ground zero of positive departures may come to fruition after all. Just not at the levels we had hoped for.. ;)

As a whole, the nation was about 110% of normal in the snowfall dept and primarily focused in the inter-mountain west.  Take a look at the Euro's Sept run for the winter and what it actually turned out to be.  It really nailed the AN snowfall in the Rockies this year and the lackluster season across the Sierra Mountain range.

Sept's run below...

It's wild how accurate the actual results turned out over a small part of the KS/MO region and parts of NE.  The Upper MW turned out to be fairly accurate as well, and of course, the abysmal season for the lower lakes, OHV and East Coast.

Topeka(TOP) Feb: 2.7"  Season: 11.7" (74% of normal 15.9" as of 3/1).

Because annual snowfall is relative to where a person lives, here is the scale I personally use to categorize my seasonal totals along with the past 24 yrs breakdown:

10-20"  Meh  (11)

20-30"  Pretty good  (3)

30-40"  Very good  (2)

>40"     Epic!  (1)

As you can see, Awful and Meh have ruled the last 24 yrs here.

The mean meteorological winter temperatures were well above average across west Michigan and that keep the lake effect snow fall down. The 3 month mean at Grand Rapids was 30.7° At Muskegon it was warmer still at 31.4° and to the east at Lansing it was 30.0° all were well above average. For meteorological winter the snow fall was 41.7” at Grand Rapids for the winter season so far it is 48.7” at Muskegon the meteorological winter snow fall was just 39.4” and for the season they are now at 50.3” and to our east at Lansing the meteorological winter snow fall was 36.9” and for the season they are at 42.7” While Muskegon and Grand Rapids are much below average in the snow fall department Lansing is near average.

I thought I'd be lacking in the LES dept as well, but surprisingly I'm at 27% (I consider ~25% normal). Ofc, I can't really parse lake enhancement from pure LES in those events that contain both so an event on the same day is weighted as mostly Lehs/LES or mostly synoptic. I simply divide between obvious synoptic snow, and anything that is >50% helped by the lake due to a cold NW flow component like the surprise Arctic CF the week before Christmas for instance. Were it not for that 2.5", my LES percent would've been closer to 20% and below avg here as well.

As a whole, the nation was about 110% of normal in the snowfall dept and primarily focused in the inter-mountain west.

Where do you get 110% from?  I don't even understand how that can be calculated for the entire nation.

I am curious what the second map looked like for 2016-2017, especially for the west.  Most of that map would be dark green for the west.
