Niko
NWS recent update..gonna score my first winter headline of the new season?? Stay tuned.. .UPDATE...Issued at 1045 AM EDT Wed Oct 30 2019 As we forecast yesterday the snow did develop this morning, beforesunrise, causing some monitor accumulations as seen on some ofthe our web cams (like Bangor and Allegan) plus the snow issticking on the grass and on cars at our office. The thermalprofiles indicate the atmosphere will become to warm for snow toreach the ground by early afternoon. We do not expect andsignificant accumulations (more than an inch) from this morningsevent. We are thinking about some sort of winter weather headline forThursday into Thursday night as the latest model run (NAM12) weshould get some measurable snow. We have to coordinate with nearby offices yet through. 1 Quote Snowfall for Winter 2023 -24 for Metro Detroit Area Oct 2023: 0.2" AN Nov 2023: 2.2" AN Dec 2023: 0.5" BN Insane! CentralNebWeather
Snow just stopped. I would say 2-2.5" just by looking outside so not official. Cloudy skies still with temp of 21 and wind chill of 10. Potential record lows tonight around 10 degrees. If the skies clear and with snow cover, they might slip below 10. Hawkeye
As I've said before, I just hope we don't get this little early snow and then nothing again until 2020. I always fear that'll happen, but we shall see with time. Just like early-season tropical storm activity means nothing for the heart of the season, I don't think early snow means anything for the rest of the season. I think several years ago there was an October blizzard in the northeast US, but the rest of their season stunk. 2 Quote season snowfall: 34.8" '22-23: 30.2" '21-22: 27.1" '20-21: 52.5" '19-20: 36.2" '18-19: 50.2" '17-18: 39.5" Average snowfall: ~30"

jaster220
Even NWS mentions "if this were winter.." .DISCUSSION...(This evening through next Wednesday)Issued at 329 PM EDT Wed Oct 30 2019We are issuing a Winter Weather Advisory for our northerncounties late tonight into mid morning Friday, then for the mostof the CWA near and north of I-96 from early Thursday afternooninto mid morning Friday. The models have come into good agreement on how this storm willplay out. An upper level system over eastern Colorado early thisafternoon will race northeast and close and try to go negativetilt Thursday. The low at 500 mb will track just south of Michiganbut the trowal tracks across our central CWA during the midafternoon into the early evening. There is 20 to 30 knots of windnearly perpendicular to height surfaces as this is happening. Asthat his happening the colder air is moving in. If this were later inthe year this would be decent snow storm for sure. However it isstill only late October. Model sounding show the freezing levelfalling to near 500 feet over GRR by mid afternoon. This brings upthe question of how much snow can accumulate during the day withtemperatures just above freezing. Typically it`s a rate of fallissue. If it`s snowing more then a half inch an hour it willaccumulate. The HREF is showing 2 to 4 inches over most of thearea near and north of I-96 (east of Lansing) by 8 pm Thursday. Ithas 4 to 6 and locally 8 over our northern CWA. Given the systemis closing off with good trowal and cold air is wrapping into thesystem I am concerned this will over-preform tomorrow. We wererather conservative in our snowfall forecast. This will give latershifts a chance to update as needed. The other reason to issue theWinter Weather Advisory is this will be first decent snowfall ofthe season and snow should be falling a significant rate aroundthe evening commute. Also winds will be increasing and given theleaves are still on the trees we could be looking at power outagesfrom snow loading on trees. All of this moves out by mid morning Friday. There is a series ofclipper system that come through after that. One Saturday thenanother system around Sunday afternoon into Monday (warmadvection) followed by a stronger system in the Tuesday timeframe. This seem to have the coldest air of the season behind. 3 Quote Winter 2023-24 Snow Total = 53.1" (90% Normal Season) Largest Storm: 12" (1/12-13) Oct: 0.1 Nov: 2.9 Dec: 7.5 Jan: 31.7 Feb: 6.0 Mar: 4.3 Apr: 0.1 Avg = 59.2" (Harrison): 2023-24 = 53.1" Avg = 45.0" (KDTW): 2022-23 = 33.5" 2021-22 = 35.6" Avg = 49.7" (KRMY): 2020-21 = 36.2" 2019-20 = 48.0" 2018-19 = 56.1" 2017-18 = 68.3" 2016-17 = 52" 2015-16 = 57.4" 2014-15 = 55.3" 2013-14 = 100.6" (coldest & snowiest in the modern record!) 2012-13 = 47.2" 2011-12 = 43.7" Legit Blizzards (high winds and dbl digit snows): Feb 2011, Dec 2009, Jan 2005, Dec 2000, Jan 1999, Mar 1998, Nov 1989, Jan 1982, Jan 1978, Jan 1977, Apr 1975, Mar 1973, Jan 1967, Feb 1965, Jan 1918
