St Paul Storm
Came home for lunch and the lake ice has grown from just the shoreline this morning to now covering the ENTIRE lake, which is 57 ft deep in the middle. checked with my neighbor that has lived here for about 20 years and this is the earliest the lake has frozen over during that timeframe.

I remember that incident from two years ago. My heart just broke when it happened. It was a young couple that lived around my area. A friend of ours knew the male personally because he'd visit her restaurant establishment quite frequently. So sad. Never trust ice. The lakes that are about 45 min. north of the twin cities have been frozen for a week now. Some guy decided to try fishing on one in Cambridge a couple days ago and obviously broke through. I know ice fishing is fun and all, but have a little patience and give it more than a week! On another note, I've been keeping records since 2017 of what the weather was like daily around our area. As much as I don't recall this, we had a similar fall cold spell around this same time back in 2017. The lows were almost as low as they are now. The difference that I noticed was the daytime highs. We've been about 5-7 degrees cooler than 2017's daily high. Also, back in 2017 the lakes were already frozen over up north during this same time period as well. I'm trying to even recall what 2017-2018's winter was like. I think it was more colder than anything, with the more significant snowfalls occurring after January. I do know just like last year we had a late start to spring. Just found this all interesting because while it seems odd for it to be this cold here for this time of year right now, it was actually very similar two years ago! Average high temp below 32 here isn't until the first week of December. In fact, it looks like December, January and February are the only months with average highs below 32F. I'm sure your winters are at least a month or so longer than here....which is a long time. I moved here from Chicago back in 2013 and I can honestly say the winters here are noticeably different. Sure Chicago gets snow, cold, etc. But winters here seem to linger. It hasn't been a shock to the system, but it has been an adjustment for me. The LR call of a historic stretch has been verified by many of us on here. Not only did we set records for snow but the cold has been whicked . Interestingly, we have seen back-to-back Novembers that will be remembered and this month isn't done just yet. Blocking is going to get things rocking around Thanksgiving week. I'll provide some LR ideas later this morning. Chicago broke daily record low's on both the 11th & 12th, but what was noteworthy is the record low of +7F yesterday which was the coldest temp ever recorded so early in the season. #Historic

It looks like the overnight low at the airport was 15 and here at my house the overnight low was 16. For today the average H/L at Grand Rapids is 49/34 the record high is 70 set in 1989 and the record low is 10 set in 1986. The record snow fall for today is 3.2” set in 1959. What a pattern this would be leading up to Thanksgiving week. I was telling my kids of a blizzard that hit here 2 days after Thanksgiving of 1983 when I was a kid. We were stranded at my grandparent's farm for several days. We had 3 snow days the next week as clean up efforts were slow. Around here the winter of 1983-1984 was amazing with many storms/blizzards and the record breaking cold spell around Christmas.
