Potential snowstorm for the NE is looking high....(NYC in play as well, spits half a foot for them) Looks like that secondary Low will do the job and drag in colder air.

Non weather related but, Anyone remember just when the term "Black Friday" started? I know growing up in both Alpena and Bay City Michigan it was just the "day after Thanksgiving" The term Day after Thanksgiving sales was used and that was the day when both towns had their tree lighting events. As kids we would have to go downtown and sing carols before the tree and the other downtown lights were turned on. But I do not remember the term "Black Friday" used. The first time I can remember it was it must have been in the early 70's on it was on the national news that was on at 6:30 it those days. But still can't remember the term "Black Friday" being used in in either Bay City or Alpena at that time until later maybe it late 70's or sometime in the 80's

Woke to heavy fog today. It's still lingering as skies continue to darken.

We could see some heavy showers today as a warm front backs up and a High around 68*.

Showers and localized storms will be the call of the day through the evening.

Currently 49* Heavy fog

Early 60's.

I always thought, as usual, marketers were just using a workers day off as an opportunity to make a lot of money. People love the term "sale". But if it's a true bargain and it's something you've been needing or planning it's a good thing. But too many people just go crazy and spend too much.

I may buy a pair of jeans today, but, that's it. I'm way too practical for marketers to like me. But saving 60% on something I wear almost everyday, that's a good deal.

Ok I did a little research and found information on the start of the term Black Friday.

The first Black Friday had nothing to do with Christmas sales at all.  Black Friday was the name was associated with September 24, 1869. Two speculators, Jay Gould, and James Fisk created Boom and bust cycle in gold prices. A stock market crash followed as prices fell 20%. The disruption in gold prices sent commodity prices plummeting 50%. So the first Black Friday was not a good thing. I was right back when I was growing up the term Black Friday was NOT used for the day after Thanksgiving sales and the unofficial start of the Christmas season.  In 1966, The Black Friday term became famous in print. That's when a story appeared in an ad in The American Philatelist, a stamp collectors' magazine.  The Philadelphia Police Department used the name to describe the traffic jams and crowding in the downtown stores. The term did not go national until the late 1970’s

I'm pretty certain that the current use of the term started in the 80s. I know that circa 1977 I was shopping in a Flint mall on that day and there was zero knowledge of anything like Black Friday sales. As I understand it, the term was started by major retailers because that was the day their bottom lines went from being "in the red" to being in the black, or profitable for the year.

Sun blasting into the southern wall of glass on my house.

The storm has definitely passed. Two days of fog, mist and thiunderstorms was nice though.

It's 69*. So, we're back on our usual warm Thanksgiving Day phase.

The next dry week will deliver 50's and 60's. Sunny to partly sunny. Yawn.

Here's my month end summary:

Avg low: 27.0

Avg high: 47.4

Departure: -1.5

Coldest temp: 0.0 (12th)

Warmest temp: 67.8 (9th)

Precip: .79" (-.85")

Snowfall: 2"

It was a cold start to the month, but the last 1/2 flipped and we ended up only 1.5 degrees below normal. From the 15th to the 30th only 3 days were below normal.

It was also a pretty dry, boring month with below average precip and it only snowed 2 days this month for a total of 2". We're at 2.7" of snowfall for the season.
