November 2019 Observations and Discussion

Tom

Recommended Posts

Local reports of about .60" of rain fell from the waves that came through overnight.  I was able to clean up both my back/front yard yesterday in the sunshine which was nice.  The ground was soaked and the leaves that were primarily in the shady areas were still wet which made it difficult to rake as I expended more than expected energy.  After I raked the leaves, it was time to cut the lawn on the lowest setting on the lawn mower.  Nice and short grass.  At the end of the day, I was beat!  Thankfully, this chore is done but there may be one more time next week before I start putting up my holiday lights.

My rain total is 0.32".

The overnight rain and morning wind have led to a major dumping of leaves.

I suppose I might start posting once in awhile again after having so much going the last few weeks that I didn't wanna take time to do it.

I ended up in a little heavier band of rainfall for a change and got 0.64" overnight which finally boosted my November liquid precip. total to just over 1". Kind of a boring and dry Nov. so far. The only snow I got this month was around 2.3" on the 11th. But the farmers in my area still have plenty of crops to harvest since a lot of it was planted late and wx conditions haven't been ideal for crop dry down so they aren't ready for snow.

Some trees still have plenty of ugly brown looking leaves and they just want to hang on forever it seems like. The lawns are littered with dead leaves once again after I chopped them up with a mower several times and had things looking good. Might just forget about them till they're all off, but it might be mid December by then! I think what happened is they froze so hard before they were ready to drop late in October right after those snows and now they're just hanging tough and dropping occasionally. Remember it happened like that a number of years ago, but wasn't sure what caused it then and think I know now. Don't want real cold to soon again.

High temps were in the low to mid 50°s here the last 3 days, but it's currently only 39°.

I keep having to remind myself the calendar still says November. If someone gave me a current run of any of the global models with timestamps removed I'd swear it was January! Blows my mind to think what we'll be seeing when winter does arrive!

Exactly....everything so far this month has been a bonus.

Me too with the leaves. I have a Magnolia tree/bush in my backyard that has the ugliest brown leaves clinging to it. I'd say it has 90+% of the original leaves but they're brown and dead and just won't drop off. I also have a juvenile Maple tree that acted like it was going to turn a pretty red color, but the leaves went from some red to a dead brown color and it still has probably 75% of the leaves on it

Light rainshowers have ended now and once the CF goes through tanite, colder air arrives. Those snowpiles did not go anywhere... :)

At least it’s December then and not November or October! I’m wondering if some of the less hardy shrubs or trees were damaged here when the temp dropped to -2° on the 12th. Things weren’t very dormant then yet.

The overnight rain and morning wind have led to a major dumping of leaves.

My place was looking so nice. Now it's a disaster out there! Large wet leafs plastered to everything. Had this with the 11/17/13 storm as well. At least the weekend's looking dry enough to get after it during daylight hours.

Winds were driving the rain in sheets under the store lamp posts this evening. It almost looked like snow. Very raw evening and normally a mid-40's stormy night like this would be very satisfying. Darn models flashing snowstorms here and there tho, combined with one in the bag already, has changed the feeling of this autumn drastically.

It starts getting cold (BN) by end of next week and also a storm to watch by that weekend (Timeframe Nov 30th-Dec2nd). Thereafter, it remains cold w highs in the 20s and lows in the teens, but looking dry. Hopefully, the storm next weekend transpires into something decent.

Same here buddy....yesterday was a very blustery, raw day indeed, but then, suddenly as that warm air came on in late in the evening, my temps made a jump in the 50s past the midnight hour, b4 dropping sharply into the low 30s by dawn.

As are many times the case in November the clouds are hanging tough. At this time, it is still cloudy and 36 here at my house. Yesterdays H/L at Grand Rapids was 53/37 that 53 is the warmest so far this November and if that holds for the rest of the month it will be the 2nd coldest maximum for the month of November at Grand Rapids in recorded history. Also yesterdays 0.28” of rain brings the total at Grand Rapids this year to 45.92” and that is good for the 6th wettest year in recorded history here with just 46.29 in 2016, 46.47” in 1993, 46.58” in 1994, 47.53” in 1986 and 48.80” in 2008 wetter. Records go back to 1892.

Big changes on the 12z Euro for the post Thanksgiving storm....Big Block across S Canada is shifting the storm south...the entire N Hemisphere is "Blocked the Freak up!"...I also noticed the 12z GEFS had more of a block up on top near S Canada.  All the ensembles are showing lots of blocking along with a tanking -EPO by Thanksgiving.  I fully expect to see shifts south in coming days on the operational runs.

Unfortunately, the snow to my south and southwest has had a difficult time advancing north due to the dry air.  Radar shows snow is falling, but looking outside it is just cloudy.  Reports of 3 inches south of me in North Central Kansas and snow covering the ground southwest of here.  Oh well, I'm sure our time is coming.
