May 2023 Observations and Discussion

Yet another in a long string of dry days on tap across the area today to close out a Top 20 coldest May and 2nd driest month in Chester County history. Some patchy smoke will be visible and you will likely smell it in the air at times today and tonight as smoke from the wildfires in Nova Scotia spread southwestward on the East/Northeast breeze. After another below normal day today we should warm to above normal for both Thursday and Friday to close out the week. Cooler weather again by the weekend.
Our next small rain chances look to be on Saturday.🤞🤞🤞

All historical weather data analytics posted by me is specifically for the climate of Chester County PA.  We continually analyze the actual raw non-adjusted NWS certified Coop observed climate data for Chester County.  There have been no post observation adjustments to any of the detailed analytics. All data is sourced from trained NWS observers and spotters. The life blood of science is to challenge what is thought to be known. The concept that climate change etc. is somehow “settled science” describes a religion - a belief system that does not welcome challenges. We should all continue to challenge science!    Snow Totals 2023/24 = 24.5" -  11/28 (0.3") / 12/7 (0.8") / 12/11 (0.8") / 1/6 (2.0") / 1/16 (2.8") / 1/19 (4.5") / 2/13 (10.5") / 2/17 (2.8")

Average Chester County PA Snow at elevations over 660 FT ASL (1983-Present) = 35.9" Snow totals by season: 2022/23 (2.7") /2021/22 (20.5")  2020/21 snow  (52.2") /  2019/20 snow (5.8" )/ 2018/19 snow (35.1" )/ 2017/18 snow (58.5") / 2016/17 snow (24.0")/ 2015/16 snow (40.8")/ 2014/15 snow = (55.3") /2013/14 snow (80.0").

The last 12 hours here have gone from bone dry to flood warnings! Quite the surprise from maybe having some scattered storms to stalling storms and rain for the last 12 hours.  Woke up out my sleep to loud boomers after i thought the rain was winding down but just re-intensify right on top of us overnight. Currently sitting at 2 inches with more steady rainfall coming down

I see ORD hit a high of 91F yesterday and could top 90F again today.  First 90's of the season are checked off the list!  Hopefully there will be some pop up storms later today to bring some moisture into the area.

Just keeps falling for ya, glad you guys are getting some.  So frustrating for me to see it so close and I have gotten nothing.

Consider yourself lucky OttumwaSnomow 🙄 … another 0.00” in the rain gauge today here - officially the driest May ever for Omaha with 0.17” total for the month. REALLY hoping things turn around during the month of June, however I am not optimistic at all.

No rain yesterday,  Nothing popped up on our side of the lake down here. .03" since May 9th.   Due to quite of bit of rain earlier in the spring, we are still not updated to "abnormally" dry.  Which is odd, because we most certainly are.   Hope it rains early next week, but not looking like much if any.  Some places in Michigan starting to pop up on the drought monitor though.  Quite dry across the nation.

So we finished May as the 20th chillest May in Chester County history back to 1888. It was also our coldest May since 2008. The dryness was also historic as we only received a scant 0.21" of rain - the only drier month was May 1964 with just 0.14" of rain. Much warmer today with temps rising into the low 80's. Tomorrow looks to be the warmest day so far this year - spots outside of the higher ridges could touch the 90 degree mark for the first time this year.
Records for today: High 96.5 (1895) / Low 34 (1930) / Rain 1.69" (1977)

I ended May with  a pathetic  .90 here.  One of lowest  amounts in all of Iowa. So far in June .25.. very demoralizing  situation. This is why in early May when i got repeatedly  missed by 10 to 15 miles I knew it was gonna hurt!

I didn't know you're a reporter for COCORAHS, or maybe I just forgot.
