Pacific Northwest Weather - May 2023

Recommended Posts

El Niño SSTA signature taking root in the EPAC.

Still wicked cool to see an El Niño develop this way. First time it’s happened in the 21st century (barring some incredible collapse) and arguably the 1st time with -NPMM of this amplitude since 1972 or 1965. And first time after a 3+ year -ENSO since 1957.

If the climate system is still capable of this, who knows what else it’s still capable of. 🤔 I thought EPAC-emerging niños were a thing of the past under the modern z-cell structure but apparently I was wrong.

Only given is something must be fundamentally different to produce a system-state evolution diametrically opposed to 21st-century climate trends. Maybe Tonga related? Idk.

best round of storms yet last night, again started around 10pm ish.  with the rain overnight probably ended up with about .4 ish.

sprinkler guy just came to do the backflow test and repair some heads.  now I need to go and get some seed to fill in the dead spots.   just in time.  hopefully I do not lose too much of the lawn.  watering starts tonight.

51 out, feels cold compared to the last 5 days or so

I knew it. Yesterday when driving back from Wenatchee for work I saw several rafts on the extremely swollen Wenatchee river as I drove by the Cashmere area and thought to myself that I would see a death in the news on Friday…Sure enough…

Thats terrible. I saw the rafting companies have been out on the Methow in the last week doing their safety training and scouting before season opens.

Lots of warnings going out up here due to the extreme snow runoff. American river has already taken two rafters in the last week.

We had 0.87" over the past few days, would be nice if we could squeeze out around 2" out of this troughy period. May 2018 had like 0.25" the entire month, so we've bestest that.

0.35” in West Seattle, should get close to a half inch by the time we’re done. I’m on the other coast this week but I can see on my cam that the plants are happy.

I never worry too much about a 20 or 30% water year rainfall deficit in these parts as long as snowpack is good and the spring is wet. The rest of the rain is just surplus that runs off. My soil is plenty wet right now, it doesn’t remember what the rainfall was in November.

I agree... and the key will be to get a few rain events over the summer per normal.

Whet. And green. And I can see the balsamroot has popped. Just planted a bunch of new trees last week so this is very welcome. We lost about 25% of our fruit trees this winter, mostly dwarfs. Wonder if they’re just not hardy enough for up there.

Trees grafted onto dwarfing rootstock (which is what “dwarf fruit trees” are), are indeed significantly less hardy than normal trees. When I lived in the southern Rockies in a town that was in a cold air basin, people avoided dwarf trees, because a cold winter was likely to kill them.

It's called clown range for a reason.

0.30” today so far at home not bad. Been stuck at 49 all morning so far too…though we should eventually crack 50 this afternoon.

About .75 here since last night.    Hopefully will be able to get over an inch.

Yeah we’re over 0.4” MTD now. Better than nothing but would like to see more than that going into summertime now. Doing a bit better with rainfall than I expected today though.

90s in mid-May doesn't seem that wild. Late April yes, but I can think of many years we have seen multiple 90s in May.
