Pacific Northwest Weather - May 2023

In the grand scheme of things, getting our newly annual disturbingly large heatwave out of the way this early in the year is probably ideal. There's still enough surface moisture left over from this cool Spring so that the hot weather won't have time to flash fry the hydrosphere. And at its surface, we still have a good month and a half of a somewhat reliable Pacific storm track to contend with, so substantial recovery of the hydrosphere is actually attainable.

Different ENSO wise, but 2008 is a good example of a major mid-May heat event which reverted back to troughing later in the month into June.

A pretty weird weather condition going on here. Around 57F and raining with filtered sunshine. You can still feel the heat of the sun, and the air is pretty humid, so I'm sitting here sort of sunbathing in the middle of a rainstorm. Quite odd... it feels tropical. Not cold at all.

Nice to see the 4-corners area in the green. More rain = more work going into evaporation and less into sensible heating.

Great shots!  I hear the bison are especially docile this time of year and you can run up and pet the calves. Pics or it didn’t happen!

Euro has been smoking the GFS lately. Given how dynamic the MJO is currently, didn't really make much sense to build a perma heat dome over the Northwest in the first place.

2 million acres burning at high intensity in California alone every summer and most of the West having unbreathable air from July to October was always normal. Nature will do what nature has always done and we can't stop it. 😀

Ended up with a 62/50 day here. Partly to mostly cloudy early then scattered showers, some heavy at times, later into the afternoon. Currently partly cloudy and 51, so could pick up a midnight low.

Meanwhile, good trends solidify on the 00z GFS.

The fact that 1.3 million people live in a city where the high averages above 116F for two months straight is insane to me. And I bet there's quite a few places there without AC.

Heat dome makes perfect sense to me. In fact I suspect this period of ridging will likely be the most anomalous of the entire warm season. Am very bullish on it.
