Pacific Northwest Weather - May 2023

Recommended Posts

I have never heard as much complaining about the weather as I have heard the past 2-3 days. People are despondent over this and universally see it as an ominous omen for our summer. I understand some of the 1% crowd might be into this, but most working people despise this kind of stuff, the global poor are most impacted by climate change.

Whet august and cold December in 2008!

First half of June that year is by far the coldest such period ever recorded at KSEA.

Serious confirmation bias there.    99% of people are despondent over sunny, warm weather in May?   At least half the population does not even care at all about the weather no matter what it's doing.

If it was going to be worse, this is how it would start... Maybe fall arrives on time this year?

I'm going to set up my camera on Maple Leaf park looking SSE toward the thunderstorms tomorrow. I'll start around sunrise and end in the evening. I'll do a timelapse.

The NAM and HRRR are keen on some kind of upper level impulse swinging through from the SE starting in the early afternoon and continuing into the night. Might be enough of a driver to provide steering winds to organize convection.

Yeah, if you can get out and enjoy it, hard to do if you work 2-3 jobs just to pay rent and feed your kids.

12Z GEM is vastly different than the 12Z GFS... holds the ridge solidly in place.   Normally I would the GFS solution is more likely to verify because it doesn't stay this hot for a long time in May.   But who knows this time?

Part of it is that the CAM's favor the south Sound because their own resolution is coarse, which emphasizes land influence and surface heating down there, so the best evening surface wind convergence is artificially displaced inland.

I've seen pop up thundershowers form over the terrain of Seattle in the right conditions, even at points earlier in the year when the sun was weaker. With gradients remaining weakly offshore, I'd surmise (hope?) that marine influence isn't too much of an issue away from the north interior.

How were we somehow cooler than places to our north yesterday? We're further south so I don't get it. You would think that Eugene/Springfield would always be hotter since we're further south and have also tend to miss out on fully coupled Arctic events since like 2016-17.

How were we somehow cooler than places to our north yesterday? We're further south so I don't get it. You would think that Eugene/Springfield would always be hotter since we're further south and have also tend to miss out on fully coupled Arctic events since like 2016-17.

The hot air is being produced in North Bend, WA, so the further you are from the epicenter, the more tolerable the conditions.

There is lots of hot air projecting coming out of the Silver Falls area this morning.   That is for sure.

If that were true, Tiger would be way warmer than Seattle this morning.

You are not very proficient in utilizing an equity lens.

You should sign off for the day.   You seem to be spiraling down a hole.

One positive note... odds favor a wetter summer this year.   It's all going to be fine.

Probably making a mistake getting the boat ready, looks like summer might be ending early this year!

It is a beautiful day, record warm morning. I've never seen a low of 66 before, let alone in May, EPS says it continues forever. Just pointing out the impact of climate change is broad, and outside our bubbles, devastating. It is also important to acknowledge our own privilege.

Really just posting on a weather forum about a highly anomalous weather event with no particular emotional connotation intended, although I do share your hope that it doesn't stay this way all summer.

Yeah, if you can get out and enjoy it, hard to do if you work 2-3 jobs just to pay rent and feed your kids.

I mean people get to go outside to get to work right? I guess if you stay inside for your job it sucks. The people that are really screwed are the ones that work the night shift. Poor souls.

I sure hope you are right. Some of us see this as just a harbinger of the rest of summer.

Lol. Okay you have my word, it is not a harbinger. If anything it’s a somewhat positive sign given how these tropical/ET teleconnections vary seasonally.

If I had been wrong about the late April - late May warm period, then I would be worried about a scorching summer, because the reasons for the warm late spring pattern are the same the reasons why it shouldn’t be scorching hot during the heart of summer. Theoretically.

Even a placid zonal-fest might be enough to bring the coldest summer in over a decade. The standards are pathetically low right now given that all we need to avoid is near all time record persistent ridging.

Don’t get me wrong, summer will almost certainly be warmer than average, but nothing like the last two. I’m thinking something like 1997 or 2019, or best case something like a modern day version of 1957 (which also torched in May and early June).
