Pacific Northwest Weather - May 2023

Models have been showing rain in the 200-240 hr time frame for 6 weeks now. Not a drop has fallen. I don't believe it.

The 00 UTC Euro ensembles were the wettest yet and are starting to converge on a system the 2nd weekend of June.

Unfortunately, it's a strung out occluded front that doesn't look to have much forcing, but plenty of time for the outlook to improve.

Lol. Can actually see eddy transport of westerly momentum in the subtropics on that 500mb image.

*ENSO/STJ will likely prevent a consolidated aleutian high/-PNA pattern so substantial cool anomalies are unlikely in WA/BC, but at least the heat will be over for awhile. And there should be beneficial rainfall.

Deer got in my garden the other night. Gave my tomatoes a trim.  That’s a bigger problem than temps in the 40s.

Deer are so destructive.   Our vegetable garden is surrounded by an 8-foot fence and that has kept them out... plus the lower part of the fencing is doubled up with chicken wire and buried a foot deep to keep out the rabbits and so far has kept out the moles.   And even if the moles get in... the bottom of the raised beds is doubled up with hardware cloth mesh to keep them from coming up from the bottom.

Our flower garden has a 6-foot fence around it and the deer have jumped in there.   We watched from the window as one deer got in... just jumped the fence from a standing still position like it was nothing.  😀

Won't happen unless Jesse moves to Southern California by that time.

We never had them jump in for years but they got in last fall and I think they have a good memory.  Have to make the fence higher.

Deer use to eat leaves of our Pot plants when we lived in CA.  I always got a good chuckle and couldn't be too pissed about it

Yes, true… But the elite warm months are happening more frequently. So last August didn’t beat August 1967, but it was in the ballpark.

No doubt. But "all-time record warm" sounds a lot more impressive, I think we'd all agree. Great media fodder.

Phil's expertise needed. Is it normal for the PNW to have heat waves and for Southern California to be cold in late spring/early summer under a developing Nino?

A Niño-like regime is most likely to produce such an outcome (particularly in tandem with -NPMM) but “normal” is all relative.

Underperformed yesterday to score a high of 61. Might not even hit 60 IMBY today if today underperforms as well. Also looking like there’s some rain chances showing up in the long range. It’s a better signal than before but it’s still too far out for it to mean anything though.

Yeah our garden is a fortress. I had to add the mesh to the lower portion a few years ago due to the bunnies. Though now that we are fenced in from the back half of the house and partially into the woods for the dogs, the deer are no longer an issue around the veggie garden.

Going to be nice weather when the NASCAR Xfintiy Series returns to Portland International Raceway for the second time this weekend.  The first race last year was in the pouring rain, but fans showed up in mass.  Can't wait to see the fan turnout and the racing on a dry racetrack!

GEFS slowly caving to the EPS/GEPS re: jet extension. This is exactly the type of pattern that the operational GFS/GEFS struggles with, as well.

If we acknowledge the silver falls sensor was likely overexposed in 1967 then last august easily takes the cake.

Imagine if Texas became Minnesota and Minnesota became Texas.

Per climo... coastal California is colder in the summer than the Seattle and Portland areas.    Its not a fair comparison though since Seattle and Portland are not on the coastline.   A more fair comparison would be to Westport or Astoria.

This May was the warmest on record at EUG. 1914 shows in Nowdata as slightly warmer, but if you're willing to accept that Eugene legitimately had an average high six degrees warmer than Salem that month, be my guest.

Fun little weather fact, on July 16, 1972, the high at Eureka, CA was 61F.

Just 30 miles inland from Eureka, the town of Willow Creek soared to 119F. This is hotter than the record high in most of the Australian Outback.

May finished here with an average of 73/48.

Definitely my warmest ever, but the period of record is pretty short (6 years).

As Jesse said, would be a nice June.
