December 2019 Weather Discussion for the PNW

I was actually in Texas from 1/3/17 to 1/10/17 or so. I remember the high reaching 81 there one day.

The plan was to go back home on 1/10/17. Because of the unforecasted and sudden nature of the event, the airport closed. We flew to Las Vegas, spent the night there waiting for PDX to open, then flew back home the next morning.

I missed the whole 2" of snow per hour thing, but not the 10" that remained on the ground afterward. What a drive home from the airport it was. Epic event.

Sweet. Ya, I was out sitting in my car in the parking lot and I saw the heaviest snow I had seen since my days in Everett. First time I ever witnessed thunder and lightning accompanying it though.

The last time I was awake during any accumulation was January 2007.

Tigerwoods, is that you?

Seriously?

Improvements in the longer range GFS.  At least it doesn't show ridging over us the entire time.  Too bad it is the longer range, but its a start toward a more active pattern, hopefully.

Looks like all the models are starting to show ridging way up north in Alaska/Northern Canada with maybe backdoor cold and overall a bit more active pattern for us.

Sure, but a boring winter pattern in early December doesn’t mean spring is starting. Last year certainly showed us that.

Hopefully we aren’t waiting until February again. So D**n due for a good January.

It’s over Jesse, winter cancel. We’ve just gotta wait til next year, this winter already peaked in October.

I think most of us are looking forward to spring. You have the clear air, new flowers, gardens, and warmer nights. No one in their right mind would be rooting for cold or snow. Now can someone share some of those warm EPS maps?

We need snow and cold, Fred. Snow and cold! I want to put 100hrs on my mower with the new plow attachment I got for it! Make it happen!!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Late January, specifically.

When was the last good late January? Sometime in the 1980s?

And late December. Seems to be less snow events and arctic outbreaks around Christmas into New Years.

Had a handful of late February events down here, but definitely late Dec, late Jan and especially Thanksgiving time period has had very few events.

I think we are still looking at the ensembles for the old GFS, FWIW.

Didn't you just get 9 inches on Thanksgiving?

Yes that's this year and 2010, but if you look at Klamath Falls 20+ years ago I bet people were more frequently snowed in around Turkey day. November also even had a higher average of snowfall. 6-8" was probably last months normal 30+ years back.

Not many events around my birthday in recent years (b-day on 12/30), only twice I can recall decent snows in that time frame, in 2012 and 2010.

Yeah seems to just go hand in hand with the overall warming of our climate. Less snow at any given point pretty much. I have hope that this solar minimum will reverse the trend but here we are probably in the driest state we've ever been in on December 3rd.

January has held its avg decently, it's been within an inch or so for about 50 years.

But definitely November is drier than it used to be.

When I came to K-Falls at my first address, Dec 3rd was at the tail end of almost 2 feet of snow over a period of 13 days in 2010.  ;)

10-15 day mean from 00Z EPS... could get interesting. The loop looks like retrogression to me.
