2020 - 2021 California and Southwest Weather Discussion Thread

I saw some flashes in the distance around midnight but everything fell apart in the stable ocean air. Feh. You can tell the ocean hasn’t warmed up that much when the high was 82, but it fell to 68 the instant the sun went down. 65 now, if you’re within the fog.

Foggy again, but it’s not as widespread today. It’s sad really; this year has been near-perfect to give us some boomers but a consistently strong Pacific High is having absolutely none of it. SD gets yet another pop up storm near Mission Valley.

More high level moisture sneaking through a hole in the wall and struggling to reach California from the ITCZ via Hawaii. The high circulation right off the coast has progress stalled. If some moisture reaches the state, even without a cyclone's help, California's baked in weather makers-daytime heating and orographic lifting-can make rain.

More about the thunderstorms last night. They were pretty crazy with a few lightning strikes per minute. More like something in the Midwest or Florida.

A house got struck by lightning in Aliso Viejo.

We had no thunderstorm activity here inland at all, although it was abnormally warm all last night, which is happening again today. Large, ominous cumulonimbus clouds were visible to the mountains east of here all day today, however I did not get a picture this time.

4 hours ago, Mr Marine Layer said:

Looks like the monsoons are over for this year. A few hot days are expected before things cool down next week.

You said that a week ago as well and look what happened :P

Generally safer to declare monsoons over in October down our way.
