That’s the thing, our winter precipitation is always a roll of the dice, and the dice are becoming loaded to have more ones on them. One wet year doesn’t change the fact that we’ll be rolling snake eyes more than ever. Remember how complacent a lot of us got after the wet winters of 2017, 2018, 2019?

If I misremembered, forgive me—I think 2018 had a few good ones hit my area. I know 2017 and 2019 in particular gave us real soakers in January and February, then we got dry again. Might have been different for you.

The sky looks like Mars today and the Marine Layer quickly burned off at 7:30 this morning.

Fine smoke high up, starting to obscure the sky here. Very fine film that makes the sunlight ever so slightly yellower.

Smoky skies above the low clouds.

Almost hard to tell where the low clouds end and the smoke begins, as the sky blurs into a uniform greyish/beige tint.

Some reverse clearing going on here.

It was mostly sunny this morning with a few patchy fog clusters. Tomorrow will be a different story.

Interesting clearing pattern today where an unusually SEly breeze is giving traditional trouble spots like Torrance and La Jolla a break for a change. Still pretty solid offshore.

Looks like the eddy is spinning. Ocean seems to be pretty warm now.

And as the ocean warms up it also looks lighter in color. In 2015 and 2018, I remember seeing crystalline turquoise waters off my beach — a real rarity for California. Sea turtles even turned up off the LA County coast in ‘15.

Always an interesting feeling to see the gloom, grab your jacket expecting a slight chill, and walk out and it’s not needed at all!

Surprised it took them *that* long to encourage conservation.

Sat view back up. The eddy is churning away and the marine layer is really deep, extending to the mountain slopes. It’ll be a “photographer’s day” with softer flattering light for human subjects.

Despite the cloud cover, it’s still warmer than many clear sunny days have been. The power of a warmer sea.

As the eddy churns, offshore flow is pulling smoke out to sea in Northern California.

Gross. You have my sympathies. You might get some relief if eddy winds bring air from the south to you. Look at the satellite and you can see how the coastal winds have turned back on themselves as far north as Big Sur.

It’s actually warmer at the coast than the valleys today, which is crazy. 71 in Woodland Hills and 70 in Burbank; 73-76 in most coastal cities here.

Dark and cloudy here, even inland. Very cool today, temps only in the upper 70s - remarkable for any day in August inland.

No rain here, of course. But the unusually high cloud base and warm conditions had this almost tropical-like feel.
