Pn1ct0g3n
Those record cool highs are especially interesting because they only affected the inland hot spots. Except for that Santa Maria reading. And they didn’t come with unusually chilly overnight lows either.
Thunder98
Mild 70F and the clouds are clearing and the sky is hazy from the fries.
Pn1ct0g3n
Lot of smoke heading our way.

Thunder98
77F right now, 11F warmer than yesterday! Dew point of 61F.
Thunder98
High of 78F today, warmer than expected. While this morning was May gray like, the temps were definitely not.
Pn1ct0g3n
Slightly cooler and breezier than yesterday despite the sun being out. Starting to get smoky now.
Reg
Smoke is dimming the sun considerably this evening, at least here inland where the visual effects of the smoke were largely unnoticed/masked up until now.
Anti Marine Layer
Smoke dimmed out the sunset here too.
Thunder98
Cooler this morning with dense fog. What happened to the deep marine layer cloud deck?

Pn1ct0g3n
Marine layer is deep for the south coast. Smoke is staying more to the north today.
Thunder98
The Marine Layer deck is only 1000' depth for areas north of Conception. Quite unexpected. Though the fog has cleared up revealing the hazy smoke skies.
Pn1ct0g3n
It’s oddly much thicker down here. High cloud bases with good visibility underneath. Dramatically cooler than yesterday, in fact the air was cooler than the ocean this morning.
Anti Marine Layer
Another day of Fogust here. Partial clearing has begun.
Pn1ct0g3n
Here too. Temps warming up to low-normal range. Very interesting reverse clearing pattern where you can see a “shockwave” of clear air running up the coast. Usually it clears from north to south, not today. Reg
Drove through drizzle and, at times, full-blown rain going down to San Diego this morning.

Thunder98
Very deep Marine layer all over the coast and mountains today! The edge of clouds is almost touching Kern County!
Pn1ct0g3n
Now that’s what I call Fogust. Not surprised to see light rain out of it as it’s so deep + locally warm seas can pump extra moisture into it. Should tamp down our fire risk I hope.
Pn1ct0g3n
What’s this? It actually rained here too? Everything is wet.

Thunder98
It's also lightly drizzly in the Santa Maria area. Good for the grass.

Pn1ct0g3n
This might be the first time in my 33 years I’ve gone for a walk in the second half of August, after a rain, in a light jacket. It’s wild. expecting some record cool highs to be set or tied. I’m calling this the “Godzilla Eddy of ‘21”
Pn1ct0g3n
It may be cool now, but the heat is supposed to return next week.

Pn1ct0g3n
Reverse clearing over parts of the ocean while cloud cover persists as far inland as the Antelope Valley.
Pn1ct0g3n
Warmed up to sl. below normal with broken cloud cover. Some inland areas still unusually cool. 79 in Menifee, 80 in Winnetka. Even Palm Springs only hit 95.
Reg
Got rained on again driving back up from San Diego earlier this afternoon, around Escondido. Clouds have abated somewhat here though.
Thunder98
The clouds are finally clearing up and the sun is out. Despise being cloudy much of the day, it went up to 72F! If this same pattern occured in May, instead of 72F, it would be 62F due to ocean temps being cooler in May than in August.

Pn1ct0g3n
Marine layer is deep, but not quite as deep as before. Note how its “texture” changes depending on the water temps in the area.
Pn1ct0g3n
This was supposed to be 4 days of weak troughing right? And instead we’re getting May-like land conditions with August sea conditions…
