1/10 - 1/11 Plains/Lower Lakes Major Winter Storm

Wow! From 5-10 inches in KC in many runs leading up to today to some struggling to get to an inch of snow tomorrow.

EURO/NAM totally flipped today, less then 24 hours out from the snow part of the storm.

Hopefully they are wrong and the 18z HRR is correct which still shows the 4-6 inch band.

Nothing is a guarantee in the world of snow.

I think we are going to see around 2-5 in of snow the question is ice, do we get frz rain or sleet?

HRRR brings another round of precip to the area tomorrow morning, but despite the column certainly supporting snow, the lack of moisture perfectly collocated with the DGZ might hinder flake production and yield more FZR/graupel rather than flakes. Seems like kind of an odd evolution to me, and if true, may hinder accums for at least part of saturday. hrrr_2020011020_018_41.59--92.07.png

As models suggested, the snow/sleet line in this area is barely moving.  It'll take hours to get down to Cedar Rapids.

season snowfall: 34.8"

'22-23: 30.2"      '21-22: 27.1"      '20-21: 52.5"      '19-20: 36.2"      '18-19: 50.2"      '17-18: 39.5"

Average snowfall: ~30"

The snow is coming down at a pretty good rate right now in my backyard here in Southwest Omaha. The snow that is falling is blowing around pretty good, however I would estimate around 1 to 1 1/2 inches of snow is on the ground here.

Looks like I might tack on another half to one inch of snow to grab my biggest snowfall total so far this Winter season, yay LOL!

If the SN/IP line doesnt get here soon enough, it's going to start really cutting into totals and we may only get an inch or two. Looking at radar, the main slug of precip is already well into Iowa....

Incredible how this (quite literally) happens with every storm.

It's not even sleeting now.  It has switched back to rain.  We'll be lucky to get 2" of snow out of this.

There's a decent glaze on non-ground surfaces now.  The tree limbs are iced up and there are icicles on the bird feeder.
