The ECMWF is much more bullish with the PV split/SSW potential than the GFS (which re-consolidates the vortex quickly).

 

I think the “blocky” outcome might hinge on the degree/timing of the wave driving/PV split..can it really be knocked out? Been a behemoth all winter.

The one time I flew in a helicopter it was hard to not think...what if this thing stops running or something.  No wings to glide to a graceful landing.

Queue the Jaws music!  The EPS has both the PNA and EPO going solidly negative this time.  The last cold snap was all - PNA and those are notriously precarious as Jan 2005 will also attest to.

The one thing besides the great winters in Maine that sounds appealing is the summers are much cooler than the rest of the Eastern US.  Those muggy / wet summers are a deal breaker for me.  In the West we can go for weeks with nothing but sunshine which makes it possible to work on projects outside without having to protect anything from getting wet.  I know Maine isn't like that, but at least it's not oppressive.

for sure, with the ocean so close it's hard to get super hot. I live right at the shoreline, we rarely get above 85 unless it's on a strong westerly wind. I suspect it's similar in WA/OR!
