Yeah it may be almost 40 in the sunbreaks, but the air aloft is very cold today. The heavy shower here in Salem has briefly covered the ground. Along the river in NE Salem is about as much of a banana belt as you will find around here too.

Lol, I assume you don’t follow/play baseball?

 

When you have pitches of varying speeds/spin rates coming at you, typically you hedge a bit (let the ball travel, pull your hands in a bit, and sacrifice some power for contact). Maybe de-emphasize your leg-kick if you have one. If you know what’s coming (or guess) you get your bat head out sooner, extend your arms, and if you use a leg kick you might emphasize that early on for torque when returning to the back leg, or you might alter your torso plane just before and during the swing.

You truly are a written word expert on everything! Funny that you only bring this up now and didn’t drop a dime on these guys to less learned coaches, managers, players, scouts, analysts, video coordinators, ushers, season ticket holders, the ghost of Ty Cobb etc. sooner. You could have probably got your picture in the paper.

 

No doubt focusing on a zone and having knowledge of pitch selection helps immensely. That’s why it’s cheating. I just think you’re Philling it up as to your after-the-fact eagle eye which supposedly picked this up years ago while the rest of the baseball world needed boots on the ground information to unearth it.

Tell me about it. I'm just on the other side of 18 from Pacific Raceways and I've barely gotten an inch from each of the last two nights, which melted away both times. I can see the damned wall of clouds from my office window and I'm hating it

With all this baseball talk, any Mariner’s fans remember the motto from two seasons ago - “Control the Zone” or “C the Z”? I sure do and It’s honestly all I can think of when I see CZ.

I had a foot of snow downtown and had thundersnow and we were blanketed for the better part of a week so I should think that qualifies.

 

...that was a cool event. I'll admit it. I guess that's my winter storm of a lifetime-- don't think anything can compare (maybe last February if the Eugene snowstorm had stayed north).

The best storm of my childhood was February 19, 1993. 13" of snow that day. Capped off a great winter. 

 

That sounds like an amazing storm. More than a foot of snow in a day...can't imagine it.

I would watch the time period of the 25-30th for a glancing blow of continental air. Maybe some 45/25 type days in the Willamette Valley. Probably enough east wind to keep PDX above 26.

Well, it's snowing here. Not sticking, but it's pretty and I'm going to savor it. Likely the last for the foreseeable future.

At the very least it’s a nice change of pace from what has been a pretty gloomy stretch over the last several weeks.

In the PNW our climate can be pretty localized. There are very few winters where the entire I-5 corridor just gets slammed, or slammed at the same time. 

 

1992-93 is a good example. It is arguably the best winter regionally in the past 30 years (At least for Oregon, but I do not believe there has been a colder winter in the PNW since.). Yet snowfall varied wildly even in the Willamette Valley. Salem had 32", Eugene 18", PDX 14". Still a good winter all around, but PNW snow events are often hit or miss.

Given I get a lot of snow, but 95% of it falls with the temperature in the 31-32 range, I have noticed it takes very heavy snow to accumulate much between 10a-2p, especially once you get into late February and March.

Snow is not melting off too quickly today, hopefully we can get to 4 to 6 inches on the ground by tomorrow.

Something else to remember for PDX area posters, other than right on the water in downtown Seattle, the Puget Sound gets a lot more snow on average than most places in the PDX metro area. That convergence zone is like a snow making machine sometimes. I am 500' higher than Tim, but I bet he averages at least 10-15" more snow a year than I do.

Was that on a Sunday when a C-zone stet up over the north valley?  There was a day, Sunday for sure when the temps and rain went from the 40's  to low 20's, blowing and drifting snow then cleared up that night.  I was living near Canby and it was the best and most intense change over from cold 40's rain to blowing and drifting snow that day.  It was an amazing event.  Stayed cold most of the week.  Didn't have to teach most of the week.

Lots of graupel in downtown Portland during the lunch hour.  Enough to coat the cars.
