Part II- January 2020 Obs and Discussion

That was February 12, 1995. Another great event. We got about 5" down in the Silverton area with that event. I know some places around PDX got a foot that day.

The winter of 1994-95 was pretty mild overall, but we had that event, and a nice 2-3" snow event at the beginning of December too.

That was the most intense C-zone I have ever experienced. Went to church and it was raining and 42.  Came out and drove about a mile north and it was like we drove through a curtain.  Full on blizzard.  Got maybe 6" out of it and some good drifts.  Cleared off and temps ended up in the high teens.  Winds had to be 30-40mph during the event.  Thought I was in Fargo.

It WAS snowing. Now it’s sunny!

At the very least it’s a nice change of pace from what has been a pretty gloomy stretch over the last several weeks.

Okay Jesse, let me have it!!!! I deserve it!!!

I was just thinking these are probably the bluest skies I’ve seen in at least 2-3 weeks. Pretty!

I like blue skyes as much as the next guye. I just don’t need them pumped into my system intravenously 24/7/366 to simply come within striking distance of normal dopamine and seratonin levels.

For those looking for a minor miracle tomorrow evening, the basin at least thus far has held on to the cold fairly well. The Euro had most of it into the mid 30’s by late morning and most spots are still in the low-mid 20’s.

Hard to know if this will be at all meaningful with the synoptics of the system but it may at least lend a LITTLE credibility to the colder GFS solution which likes the frontogenic dynamic.

12z CFS showing a bit of a continental intrusion towards the end of the month too. Would at least help to bring our averages down a little bit. Gets close to a pretty decent pattern, but the block is too skinny and gets undercut by some splitting systems.

We will be leaving town tomorrow morning. You’re welcome in advance Portland metro.

Lol, I assume you don’t follow/play baseball?

When you have pitches of varying speeds/spin rates coming at you, typically you hedge a bit (let the ball travel a bit, pull your hands back, and sacrifice some power for contact). Maybe de-emphasize your leg-kick if you have one. If you know what’s coming (or guess) you get your bat head out sooner, extend your arms, and if you use a leg kick you might emphasize that early on for torque when returning to the back leg, or you might alter your torso plane just before and during the swing.

You would probably like my place, I have a baseball/wiffleball stadium in the back yard with 25' MLB type foulpoles, a faux jumbotron and lights.  Apparently a bit immature but I also have a pickleball court too.  Haven't put the artificial golf green in the lawn yet though.

Not likely. That's expected well after sunset.

Let's do a different one... Not sure if you'd call this snow sledding or grass sledding.

That's great. I'm planning on spending some time playing in the snow tonight with my daughter when I get home.

CFS has also been pretty insistent on getting the Pacific jet going for about a week at the beginning of February. Phil, what do you think?

Parents just texted saying they measured 13 inches on the ground.

They live about 4 houses down from our old house in Carnation.   <_>

I told her we barely got 2 inches and she said I could come over, bring a bucket, and take some home. Seriously contemplating this right now.

Here's a picture she just texted me...

Dang! I’m missing winter all the sudden in a serious way!!!!

Beautiful!!!

This is the second year in a row where ensembles showed within 3-5 days incredibly high odds that we would end up with "significant snow" in the Portland area....and both times...skunked.

I'm glad I didn't buy that snow shovel.  Saving my money for my retirement condo in Flagstaff. :)

yeah the Feb 2019 event was really unfortunate for PDX, so close to scoring big.  This event looked promising too but part of me was always a bit skeptical because a rapidly strengthening low moving SE into the central OR coast is just so unusual and not nearly as believable as what the models now show.

The last two years have been really bad for Portland but I do think sooner or later these things will even out and we will get our chance to score big.

It's currently in North Bend and it is impressive! Visibility plummeted.

I'll say

Still snow on the ground and 33 here in port orchard. Trees and ground are white here...only about 1". Looks like heavier amounts are not too far north of here.

Seatac has a NE wind. They switched to sw for an hr.

Must be related to this little band of snow out here.

ECMWF says south wind there soon and roaring by evening.
