Bryan1117
3rd driest February on record so far in OmahaOutside of a very slight chance of light rain showers tomorrow afternoon, it appears that ranking will hold serve (3rd driest February) as the next four days look very dry and warm (for February standards). Amazing that we went from getting 27 inches of snow during February of 2019, to less than an inch of snow this February with virtually no precipitation to be found. Thankfully February is typically one of our driest months around here, however if this trend continues into March and April we might go from epic flooding last year in the spring, to dust storms this year. With the way Mother Nature has been acting lately, it would be right on cue.
OmahaSnowFan
It’s been crazy to see not just the difference between last February and this one but actually the difference in extremes. Greatest snowfall to 3rd driest. I’m hoping we don’t dry out too much but we have been wet for so long so... jaster220
I went out to DeSoto on Saturday this past weekend and caught a couple of good shots. Saw at least 1/2 a dozen of Bald Eagles and several other large hawks. My favorite shot is probably the first one where this hawk was taking off from the tree. I've always loved these "action shots". Had an eagle circling above my car last Sunday during that warm-n-sunny weekend. While there are some very limited nesting sites in SMI, it's rare to actually see them. Always see them in NMI where the habitat is more correct. Some will even winter-over up there, feeding off of dead deer. The flesh remains rather "fresh frozen" in a typical winter up there and apparently that's good enough. They are certainly not scavenger birds that clean-up rotting road kill 1 Quote Winter 2023-24 Snow Total = 52.8" (89% Normal Season) Largest Storm: 12" (1/12-13) Oct: 0.1 Nov: 2.9 Dec: 7.5 Jan: 31.7 Feb: 6.0 Mar: 4.1 Apr: 0.0 Avg = 59.2" (Harrison): 2023-24 = xx.x" Avg = 45.0" (KDTW): 2022-23 = 33.5" 2021-22 = 35.6" Avg = 49.7" (KRMY): 2020-21 = 36.2" 2019-20 = 48.0" 2018-19 = 56.1" 2017-18 = 68.3" 2016-17 = 52" 2015-16 = 57.4" 2014-15 = 55.3" 2013-14 = 100.6" (coldest & snowiest in the modern record!) 2012-13 = 47.2" 2011-12 = 43.7" Legit Blizzards (high winds and dbl digit snows): Feb 2011, Dec 2009, Jan 2005, Dec 2000, Jan 1999, Mar 1998, Nov 1989, Jan 1982, Jan 1978, Jan 1977, Apr 1975, Mar 1973, Jan 1967, Feb 1965, Jan 1918

They do hunt if need be, but its much more energy conservative for them to soar in the air riding air currents and using their vision to find carrion from above. Around me that carrion has largely become road killed deer and fish gut piles. Over the next month as the snow melts exposing the winter road kills, large groups of crows and eagles can be seen scavenging and fighting for the carcasses as you drive down the highway.

OmahaSnowFan
That actually reminds me of something. A couple years ago I was driving to work and happened to notice a dead rabbit or something in the middle of the road. A couple hours later I had to run back home. As I was heading down the same road towards the spot where the roadkill was, I see a large bird coming in from above. I think, “I bet it’s going to grab that dead rabbit.”Sure enough the bird swoops in, lands on the road long enough to grab the animal and then takes off, all as I’m heading towards it maybe a 100 feet in front of me.It ended up being a Bald Eagle! weatherfan2012
4-8 years is really the max for these types of cycles, imo. Long-term, I'm probably nearer 5.5 years on this overall type of pattern that started in summer of 2014. It's sad but seeing drought risks return to the south and west will be a good indicator of this longer term cycle passing. (At least the portions driven by the equatorial tropics). The problem we face here is entering or fading back into a type of pattern that persisted from 2008-2012 where the ridges don't migrate. Lots of things to look at going forward. what ever the case maybe it certainly was one of the suckest nation wide winters That I can remember in a long time.As you said these pattern comes in cycles it will be interesting to see where it gos a few years down the road. One thing for sure if this current pattern continues well into summer. This could end up being a nasty one heat and perhaps storm wise.
