February 2020 (It's cold at the end of the run!)

3rd driest February on record so far in Omaha

Outside of a very slight chance of light rain showers tomorrow afternoon, it appears that ranking will hold serve (3rd driest February) as the next four days look very dry and warm (for February standards). Amazing that we went from getting 27 inches of snow during February of 2019, to less than an inch of snow this February with virtually no precipitation to be found.

Thankfully February is typically one of our driest months around here, however if this trend continues into March and April we might go from epic flooding last year in the spring, to dust storms this year. With the way Mother Nature has been acting lately, it would be right on cue.

It’s been crazy to see not just the difference between last February and this one but actually the difference in extremes. Greatest snowfall to 3rd driest. I’m hoping we don’t dry out too much but we have been wet for so long so...

Attm, its 25F under mostly cloudy skies and plenty of snowcover. A lot of blowing and drifting snow out there.

Got a light dusting of snow overnight.

Yeah, just a light dusting here.  Up to an inch has fallen between CR and Dubuque and that area is getting another decent band now.

I went out to DeSoto on Saturday this past weekend and caught a couple of good shots. Saw at least 1/2 a dozen of Bald Eagles and several other large hawks. My favorite shot is probably the first one where this hawk was taking off from the tree. I've always loved these "action shots".

Had an eagle circling above my car last Sunday during that warm-n-sunny weekend. While there are some very limited nesting sites in SMI, it's rare to actually see them. Always see them in NMI where the habitat is more correct. Some will even winter-over up there, feeding off of dead deer. The flesh remains rather "fresh frozen" in a typical winter up there and apparently that's good enough. They are certainly not scavenger birds that clean-up rotting road kill

In fact, Bald eagles are largely scavengers, eating carrion or using their size to steal other animal's captured prey.  They do hunt if need be, but its much more energy conservative for them to soar in the air riding air currents and using their vision to find carrion from above.  Around me that carrion has largely become road killed deer and fish gut piles.  Over the next month as the snow melts exposing the winter road kills, large groups of crows and eagles can be seen scavenging and fighting for the carcasses as you drive down the highway.

The weekend and Monday mid to upper 70's. Then mid to upper 60's for a week.

Rain Tuesday and Wednesday.

Looking forward to the warm weather as it will drive away the possibility of this virus worrying people. Viruses love cool waeather.

So, come on sunshine.

Looking like early spring.

Today ended up being pretty cold.  We were in the upper 20s most of the day, under-performing most recent Euro runs by several degrees.  Thankfully, we're done with temps this cold.

Yep, that’s why I see so many out here in farm country. I’ve often seen eagles eating dead animals. It’s gross, but that’s a good thing though. If some farmers lose a few animals they’ll put them out in the open for eagles to dispose of. Eagles will also hang around open waters to fish of course.

I’ve seen an eagles nest at my cousins place a mile away the other year.

Here are some interesting snow stats for you CR peeps. This confirms what you’ve been thinking!

http://www.midwestweathercenter.com/nstew-blog/2020/2/28/missing-the-big-one-streaks-without-a-big-snow-storm

Certainly way over-due at 47 years lol, but with an historical avg of 18 yrs between, climo is definitely NOT your friend if you want BD's. Y'all will likely end the drought with a March of 1923 scenario. At least you can hope, eh?  We've been 42 yrs since a widespread CAT-5 for SMI, tho we've had several CAT-4 (12-18") hits in the last 10-15 yrs. Noticed that your BD years back in the 20's & 50's were not great times over our way fwiw.

Well, there's plenty, and I mean PLENTY of road-kill across SMI but I've never in my life witnessed an eagle feeding off of it. Must be they either don't like the population density for nesting purposes, or they don't like fighting the countless buzzards over dinner around SMI, lol.

Guessing the APX Mets are as ready for spring as the rest of us Peeps as they have not updated their snow depth map the last 2 days.

Their real-time depth seems to have peaked with the big LES hit tho. Deepest I've seen it all winter. The crown of winter most likely...

My final February precip is only 0.44".

My final February snowfall is only 1.7", from one event.  This is the only February since 2008, when I began keeping track, that only had one measurable snow event.

I don't think we will reach anywhere near 50º today.  We started pretty chilly and the temp has been slow to rise.  It is still only 42º.  Models over-forecasted the temp yesterday and again today.

Update:  We maxed out at a still-chilly 44º.

Plenty of road kill here as well and I can't remember seeing them dining on that either, come to think of it. They're probably traffic shy or smart enough not to become a target of road kill them selves. Ha

That actually reminds me of something. A couple years ago I was driving to work and happened to notice a dead rabbit or something in the middle of the road. A couple hours later I had to run back home. As I was heading down the same road towards the spot where the roadkill was, I see a large bird coming in from above. I think, “I bet it’s going to grab that dead rabbit.”

Sure enough the bird swoops in, lands on the road long enough to grab the animal and then takes off, all as I’m heading towards it maybe a 100 feet in front of me.

It ended up being a Bald Eagle! Wish I could have recorded it.

4-8 years is really the max for these types of cycles, imo. Long-term, I'm probably nearer 5.5 years on this overall type of pattern that started in summer of 2014. It's sad but seeing drought risks return to the south and west will be a good indicator of this longer term cycle passing. (At least the portions driven by the equatorial tropics).

The problem we face here is entering or fading back into a type of pattern that persisted from 2008-2012 where the ridges don't migrate. Lots of things to look at going forward.

what ever the case maybe it certainly was one of the suckest nation wide winters That I can remember in a long time.As you said these pattern comes in cycles it will be interesting to see where it gos a few years down the road. One thing for sure if this current pattern continues well into summer. This could end up being a nasty one heat and perhaps storm wise.
