Surprised no one has brought this up yet. Phil?

Won't last.

Tropics update: We are seeing widespread enhanced trade winds around the equatorial belt to take place over the next couple weeks. Strong trade winds will result in enhanced downwelling in the western Pacific & upwelling in the eastern Pacific. #ENSO

AND:

Replying to
The ocean T cross section continues to show a warm downwelling wave superimposed on an anomalously shallow thermocline (cold anomaly under warm anomaly). Suggests when the Kelvin wave exits (w/out new big event), La Niña conditions can begin and grow.

Those little wiggles in the niño 3.4 anomaly aren’t really important. I don’t think this one has staying power with a trade surge coming.

Bottom line, this was/is a +ENSO base state winter with a strong vortex and broad z-cells. Just “blah” all around. What happens going forward depends on whether forcing enters the WPAC or if there’s a coherent low pass component back in the IO/Indonesia domain.

Spent the afternoon soaking up the sun floating on the Sound in my kayak.  Boardwalk at Redondo was very busy with folks walking about when I ported.  Seemed like a Saturday

One big problem with this weather. It would be a lot easier for people to social distance and stay inside if we were getting some needed rainfall. Would be a win win in that sense.

That was my thought when I came in.  This is not social distancing when everyone is walking the boardwalk!

I wants this virus to go aways please !!!

it’s not going to go away. It will always be around just in a more controlled manner with vaccinations. I guess social distance until vaccines are confirmed.

I am planning on a little saltwater therapy myself tomorrow.  I am enjoying working from home, but in my 35-ish years of working, I've always been around people as part of my job.  I'm struggling a bit to find a new balance... I feel like a "stay at home" order is imminent, so I better get out there while I can.

Chilly gfs run tonight.

Fun active run. Just what we need. Don't ask me about the ensembles. I am headed to bed.

WOW. 962mb low off the coast March 30-31.

Probably not going to happen but I’d love to see it. We’ve had pretty much no significant wind events from the west recently.

Strong west winds are pretty uncommon around here. Our strongest winds are from the south or east generally

But we don’t get the west winds until the low is onshore. Confusing world.

I'm sure there was an area of low pressure somewhere offshore when we were having our east winds last weekend. They need something to flow toward.

Was the low pulling them in or the high pressure on the east side pushing them out?

Both. The pressure differential between the continental interior and the ocean causes east winds to flow through the Gorge. This is why local meteorologists refer to PDX-DLS and OTH-GEG gradient.

Pretty sure it’s the same reason why Santa Ana winds happen in southern CA and Diablo winds in northern CA.
