Another nice day. 75/49 spread. I was thinking today that the weather the last week or so has kind of reminded me how our Septembers used to be. Warm days and cool nights, dry air, no smoke.

Hadn’t really thought about it like that but yeah…

Whole West Coast has had an odd spring with California and the PNW being polar opposites.

March and the first 3 weeks of April were unusually cold here.   We were on the same track as last year and then it flipped.   The late April through early June period this year has been the complete opposite of last year.   Having a proper forwards spring has been much better than the backwards spring last year.  I think that is tough on the trees.  Now we need rain.

Last year May and June were warm down in California with very little May Gray/June Gloom and an early start to monsoon season. But I remember you froze to death on July 3.

Hopefully our summer starts by 4th of July as we have been extremely PNW-like all of 2023 so far.

July 3rd was crazy cold... but it was surrounded by generally warm weather.   Summer really got started last year on 6/20.

Another deep blue day! Quite windy all day as well. Been amazing weather for getting projects done, but we need liquid to fall from the sky. Getting way too dry, and the entire state is going to go up in flames on the 4th if we don’t get anything meaningful between now and then.
69/44 on the day.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

This is so inaccurate I'm not even sure what to do with it. March 2022 was fairly mild regionally, early April 2022 had a major heat spike.

This year that was one of the coldest periods of all-time in the March 1- April 10 period.

It was the 3rd coldest March all time for Oregon.

The cold/wet didn't really take hold until about April 10th last year, so this year has been on a different track from the start.

I don’t care if we don’t get any more rain if this run of perfect weather continues. The dew point is in the 30s right now, it’s glorious. No sign of any extended heat either.

I’m headed down to the north California coast later this week, it looks like I might see thunderstorms and not much of a marine layer which is quite odd.

First week of July 2022 was actually pretty cool at least in northern CA. I remember Redding got five consecutive sub-90 highs in July, first time since 2011 that has happened. Medford got a huge t-storm outbreak and even the hottest areas got a comfortable Fourth of July.

I was in Sunriver that week and IIRC only one day broke 80, most highs were low-mid 70s. Saw multiple thunderstorm outbreaks. Really fun trip.

I feel like SW Oregon has gotten an annoying amount of dry lightning the past couple of summers.

My post was accurate.   You just misread it.

I said March and the first 3 weeks of April this year were unusually cold.    And late April through early June has been just about the complete opposite of last year.    All true.    My point about the track is subjective of course.  It seemed like we were well on our way to another very cold spring and then it flipped and became the complete opposite of 2022.

2022 is basically a perfect anti-log to 2023. Almost all of the important climate forcings have inverted. Unlike the last 2 years which went nuclear with ridging in late June, this year should be cooler/troughy during that timeframe.

After this last heat spike to open June, the next one doesn’t rear its ugly head until sometime around mid-July.

2019 had a cold SW, warm NW pattern in May but then California warmed up by early June. What's amazing is both May 2019 and May 2023 have now averaged below 70 F in Downtown LA, which does not happen very often. It only happened about 25 times since records began in 1877.

2020 had a very weak monsoon but I'm not sure if that was because of a weak 4CH or the 4CH being too strong and too far north.

It seems climate change is causing patterns of persistent troughing next to persistent ridging and more blocking patterns.

I’m very familiar with that park since it’s close to where my dad lives and we visit it often when we’re up there. Crazy to see the grass so brown already. That’s like late summer brownness.

Yeah everywhere is brown late summer looking here now. IIRC looks worse than it did here in June 2019.

I’m hard pressed to think of any warm season in the last several years that didn’t stress our natural ecosystem to the limit in some form.

Ah, but the Knights have been pleasantly chilly, Jess!

I must have missed this yesterday. Maybe in the last week, but at many stations the record warm May was largely carried on the back of very warm nights. PDX beat the old record warm average MINIMA (2018) by over a degree.
