April 2020 Weather discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

If the cold front had been a half hour faster at Great Falls they would have beaten the record low max for the date set in 1927.  As it is the record is 33 and their afternoon high was 27.

0 minutes of rain here today. Classic PNW spring weather.

There is nothing normal about this pattern.  You have to realize that.

Definitely. Our climate is getting a lot warmer and drier than it used to be. Especially in the warm season.

There is an Arctic blast going into Montana and we are going to have some really cold mins here the next few days.  Some decades our climate gets more of a continental influence and that's when we get some fun stuff.  You are so hung up on clouds, rain, and gloom.  I guess I'm just sick of that after so many years.

The 1950s had some gloomy a** summers.

Dew points are in the teens in Whatcom County now with single digits in BC. Things are stting up for a classic round of HUGE diurnal temperature swings. Whether you like it or not this is old time sheeit.

Had close to 40 degree diurnal swings out here on consecutive days this week. I wish he had more of these extreme temperature swings out here.

Don't worry, you'll get more than you bargained for in the coming years...

Looks like some lows in the 36 to 44 degree range the next few days. Highs in the 60's, good weather.

Going to be WAY colder than that.

31.1 this morning as the sun is just coming in my north facing windows :)

This is my favorite time of year when the normally dark side of the house gets the light!

Yes... this is the time of year when the sun comes up over Mt Si which is to the northeast of North Bend.

Things are off to a great start as far as cold mins, at least IMBY.  Here is a list of impressive low temperture benchmarks I have a shot at for my personal records with today's low of 30 factored in.  To begin with only three other years have dropped to 30 or lower this late in the season.

Consecutive lows of 30 or below = Never been more than one at a time. Very likely to end up with 2 and maybe 3.

Consecutive lows of 32 or below after April 10 = record is 2.  Very likely to end up with 3 or 4.

All time record low after April 10 = record is 29 from 1985.  Very likely to tie and maybe beat tonight.

Looking further back in history impressive late season cold mins normally continue to happen very deep into spring.  In extreme cases like 1949, 1951, and 1954 some really crazy stuff happens such as frost (lows mid 30s) on July 4, or widespread lows in the mid to upper 20s on May 1, 1954, or lows in the low to mid 20s on April 20, 1951.  Nice to see this streak is going to beat anything recently recorded at least for a number of stations.

32* earlier with thin layer of ice on birdbath

Happy sunny Easter all

Tonight should be even colder.  It will be pretty hard to not have high temps a couple of degrees lower than yesterday with sub 540 thickness and northerly surface winds.

SEA is now perfectly normal for April through yesterday... with a warm, sunny week ahead.

No doubt... the one thing that stands out this April is the historic cold temps.

We are planning Easter dinner on the patio this afternoon.    :)

One thing I will say is all of the dry weather with chilly nights really seems to slow down the normal progression of spring foliage. Noticed the same thing happen during that cool and dry spell in March.

Definitely... the rain up here yesterday was nice because it finally advanced the vegetation somewhat.
