April 2020 Weather discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

No just an interior bathroom, it is a sturdy newer home. They had to shelter in the bathroom, but are okay.

I couldn’t even imagine living somewhere where the weather is actually a threat to your life several months a year.

Glad they are ok.

Even a fairly run of the mill thunderstorm out there is more intense than pretty much anything I have ever seen in the western lowlands. The kids are used to it, they have to shelter a couple times a year. Their area has not had a major tornado 1991, but there was a small one that touched nearby last year, an EF1 or so. Joplin, Missouri is about an hour NE of where they live.

It does make me nervous on stormy days like today. I stream Tulsa channel 6 on my computer during severe outbreaks , they have a really good Met who they will go live to for hours.

My daughter is spending the Spring term in Omaha ( Univ of Washington) with her boyfriend's family. She texted me after a T Storm moved in early one morning. She got up and watched it and asked her boyfriend to watch it with her. He was not impressed, even though she said it was better than anything she had ever experienced here.

The only time of year it rains there without accompanying thunder and lightning is in the winter. Tulsa actually receives similar average rainfall to PDX, but it is much sunnier as the precipitation is typically convective. Not many gray drizzly days, though they do happen sometimes.

That kinda sucks. I like gray, drizzly days a lot. They add moody flavor to what would otherwise be bland regularity.

Late May to August here is also very southern..it’s all convective precip, no cloudy days/stratiform stuff. But it’s a shorter severe season with a lower tornado risk compared to the Plains. March and April are very active in the Plains but essentially dormant here.

We set a new record high temp yesterday of 75F which broke the old record of 74F set in 2013. Pretty impressive for April at 6300'. We will finish this lousy winter with about 50% of normal snowfall and 60% of normal precip. Hopefully the Monsoon will deliver this summer.

The return of the Ridiculously Resilient Ridge. How did you do for snowfall the following winter? I know up here we got two big league Arctic Blast.

2013-2014 was one of the top 5 worst winters on record in 150 years of record keeping. Then 2014-2015 happened which shattered the old record of least snowfall. That was the year without a winter. I never had an icicle on my roof the entire winter of 2014-2015 which would seem impossible at 6300' in the Sierra Nevada. Most of our snow that winter fell in April and May. I had an unbelievable 23" of snow for the entire winter. Normal is 150" for my location.

4CH/Hadley Cell system will probably be fat this year.

Though that doesn’t necessarily mean hot for the PNW in particular (though it certainly can). But it does correlate to dryness..especially inland. I’m not sure why the stronger precip correlation(s) are found east of the cascades..that’s a question you locals will have to answer.

Strong 4CH tend to pump more monsoonal moisture north.

2014-15 was horrible up here too. I think we had one minor snow event but that was it.

Yeah that was a garbage winter...only 0.5” of snow here in late November 2014. That actually wasn’t the worst winter of the last 15 years IMO...15-16 and 09-10 both had no measurable snowfall here...and I think 09-10 was the year where I actually didn’t even see a single flake fall. That’s actually pretty hard to do. Those 3 winters make this last winter we had seem decent.

Of course, there are other ways to judge a winter aside from whether or not it snowed. December 2009 had a pretty significant arctic airmass down this way.

Hmm..I’m getting an inverted result in A/M/J (and for northern regions, M/J/J as well) with a wide Hadley Cell and broad 4CH. Higher precip in the inter-mountain SW and Rockies during J/A/S, which I presumed was monsoonal (not a true monsoon of course, but the term is still used).

The PMM and presence of a STJ (or lack there of) seems to matter significantly, though. And I’m factoring that into the equation this summer.

yeah we had 3 sub freezing highs in a row...but not a single flake. Cold snaps are pretty forgettable without snow but that’s just my opinion. It was a pretty decent cold blast.

It was a very legit early December blast. Temps at PDX and SLE were fairly similar to December 2013.

Strongest -AO ever recorded, IIRC. That was the month CPC changed the scale from +/-4 to +/-6.

Good times.

I sure hope we have a few very nice thermal heat lows this season. Would love a late July 2009 redux!

I’m hoping we can do better than the 102 that I recorded in 09.

Why? What is so enjoyable about 100 degree heat?

For all the Alaska vortex lovers on this forum, it looks like Utqiaġvik, Alaska dropped to -20°F this AM. First record low there since December 2007, less than a year before the inception of the -PMM/cold phase cycle (which terminated in 2013).

Also appears to be the coldest temperature observed there this late in the season by 11°F.
