May 2020 Weather discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

It will probably be a little warmer than average at the absolute coolest. If we do get anything in the way of active weather and clouds at any point, a long stretch absurdly warm lows will be sure to prop things up handily. In other news, good chance the sun comes up tomorrow.

I suggest you pay less attention to PDX and more to OLM. It will change your life.

Not enough heat to knock out the virus. B)

Honestly, haven't given it much thought.

I don’t blame you for sitting a few plays out after that dumpster fire of a winter forecast. Win some lose some...

I've camped in the rain too many times to count. My worst memory was when a thunderstorm hit while we were rafting. When we returned, my tent was in a puddle 4 inches deep. My friend named it lake dolt. Everything was so wet that it took 3 hours to get the fire going. We were freezing.

I tried to warn you during your run up to January 2018...

January 2018 and January 2020 were certainly swings and misses, in patterns otherwise ripe with potential.

June 2018 we camped up by Mt. Adams and it poured pretty much the entire weekend. Lots of thunderstorms too. But the best was last August 4th camping at Delintment Lake in Harney County. Lines of strong to severe thunderstorms training over the area for hours. Torrential downpours and hail for hours, probably 2-3" of rain. Unreal amounts of lightning. My 2 year old daughter took a nap the entire time, then when it ended she immediately woke up and went outside the tent to play.

Sounds like some great trips Andrew. I remember you mentioning that the area you camped on Adams was Horseshoe Lake. I love the NW side. We were camped at Killen Creek when that anomalously cold trough moved in at the end of August 2008. Chilly rain gave way to some snow mixed in on our hike, all snow above 5,000. Then a hard frost the next morning. A very memorable trip.

I also recall hearing that Sarah Palin had been chosen as McCain’s running mate on my dad’s old FM radio sitting at the picnic table one evening at the campsite. I had no idea who she was at that point and thought the announcer had said Sarah Palim.

My brothers and I camped in that area in summer 2015. Was very warm and dry.  :(

That was the summer of the massive Cougar Creek complex fire, which burned up much of the south and east flanks of the mountain.

I think we made it up to the Goat Rocks once that year, but not Adams.

Exactly 4 months ago I was doing some night plowing, this evening was equally enjoyable with a dry end of the day!

19-20 was a classic north/south winter. We didn’t have a single day with a high temp below 40F from Dec 1 thru the entire remainder of the cold season. If someone wasn’t following the weather here, they would have had no idea anything was out of the ordinary just a couple hundred miles to the north.

I have a good pic from the cascade creek fire on Mt Adams in September 2012. Incredible thunderstorm activity the night that started.

Upslope machine really got going last night. 0.45” of rain since midnight.

Low of 49 here this morning...temp in the 40s since 5/7. No rainfall since about this time yesterday morning.

We’re at 1.07” of rainfall this month...and also at exactly 7” of rainfall for spring 2020. Still slightly on the dry side compared to average for spring...but we should finish closer to 8” at the end of the month headed into meteorological summer. Much better than the final total of 4.25” in the spring of 2019.
