June 2020 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

12z Euro squishes the ridge down a little faster late next week, compared to previous runs. Could score another rainy weekend.

Really is a textbook retrogression.

It’s a drier pattern regionally, though. Bears closer resemblance to the classical niña background state one would expect this summer, as opposed to the zonal/GOA trough pattern that dominated the first half of June.

Makes sense. It’s unusual to get prolonged wet patterns from this point forward anyway.

At least it could help us avoid prolonged heat.

Reminds me of winter when we see colder air drop down from Canada. More of a northerly flow but drier.

I thought you were expecting a strong 4CH this summer though? The pattern that the Euro shows in the mid to late range doesn't ring very niña to me. I'd expect a strong 4CH with more of a SW flow along the coast rather than NW flow with a developing niña.

12Z EPS continues to offer some hope for the 4th of July weekend.

I am sure its 49 very cold members and 1 member which shows the sun expanding and engulfing the Earth which skews the average up. ;)

I don’t have a problem with hiking in rain at all. My family does though. My brother is coming over for today and Saturday and I really wanted to hike on Saturday but no one else wants to now because it’s going to rain.

That’s why I’m getting annoyed at every weekend being crappy. Thankfully next Saturday is looking very nice for now but I imagine the models will find some way to take a crap on it.

Where do you usually go hiking?

Where do you usually go hiking?

The Gorge, the coast, and Mt Hood area usually.

I need to take the Clackamas River Highway from Estacada to Detroit sometime. Also check out Opal Creek wilderness. Haven’t been east of Hood River and into the eastern gorge in a very long time either. There’s a ton of places I’ve yet to see around here.

He suffers from epilepsy.

If driving is the only thing preventing him from getting out on hikes, I would pick him up and take him to the McKenzie River trail in a heartbeat!

One of my friends aunt had epilepsy. I saw her have an episode once and it was scary. That was 20 years ago, now they should have better treatment.

The long range is looking a lot different than the past several days. Bad news for fire lovers though.

The pattern you describe is more +PMM/+ENSO.

La Niña typically features Aleutian/NPAC ridging. While it can beef up the 4CH too, canonically, it’s more eastward shifted, towards NM/TX.

It’s a dry pattern anyway, so why do you care?

FWIW, with the coming pattern, small differences in the longitude/amplitude of the GOA ridge will have large temperature consequences out there.

Around 32 EPS members have the GOA ridge offshore with cool/dry NNW flow into the PNW. About 19 members (including the control run) nudge the GOA ridge eastward enough for warm conditions.

Pattern+forcing analogs favor more offshore outcome, but dynamically, I think both outcomes are plausible.

I feel for you Tiger. You got some great hiking spots down there. Does what you're dealing with prevent you from going on hikes?

Yes, even though I can physically handle it just fine, I have to have someone with me in case I fall.

Thank you, just read his page. What a strong dude he is, I will donate to his cause.

Thank you.

Sorry been a crazy day. Got the kiddos back to their mom in the central Willamette Valley and have just now gotten our cozy place somewhat back together.

Such kind words. Y'all have saved me, just like college basketball. Other than my fiance I only have 3 close friends, that I almost never see.  With you folks, I feel like I have a bunch of friends who appreciate weather and atmospheric science. Especially in such a chaotic, micro-climate-y part of the continent. I would love to go on a hike with anyone who would pick me up and make sure I'm safe. I probly need a helmet even though I really don't want to get one.

Hopefully sports starts up again soon. I'm eager to get back to games and share my story with others, thanking the schools that also saved me and others that struggle with epilepsy.

Sorry for the weird prose. I have a weird spectrum disorder that's intertwined with all of this. 2 brain surgeries weren't as scary as I thought they would be. I was joking around and smiling as the anesthesiologists put me under. They said they had never seen anyone be like that before in that situation.

He likes cool summers too

In other words, old-school PNW weather, 1950s-style.  ;)

Up to 86F. Very pleasant day. Weed burning and mowing either tonight or Sunday night. Pretty sun halo, too.

Good day on the forum! Warm sunny weather, talk of hiking and support!!!

makes me happy :)

With hiking and the outdoors we can all get along. So much better than endless preference wars.

Maybe we should have a general outdoors thread.

Endless preference wars sometime entertain me......shhhhhhhhh

I’ve taken for granted the beautiful place in which we live.  Seems as I get older the more I’m appreciating the place I grew up. PNW is paradise!

Sounds great. Never been on it. I'd walk across the nation if I had someone with me. There have apparently been 44 people to do so.

Currently 67F here with light rain. Looks like the dewpoint has shot up to 61F here, muggy by Victoria standards. The 12z WRF showed a decent soaking tonight, would be nice to see that verify before things dry out for good:

I was working down your way today. It was quite muggy especially out towards Langford in the afternoon.
