June 2020 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

Euro looks a lot less progressive with the ULL early next week. But the position of it could still give us some warm days, could be a good thunderstorm set up too depending on details.

Pretty big shift. Off on its own right now so it will be interesting to see if it's another mishandling of the cutoff low or it picked up on something that the other models have not.

Cold Season 2023/24:

Total snowfall: 26"

Highest daily snowfall: 5"

Deepest snow depth: 12"

Coldest daily high: -20ºF

Coldest daily low: -42ºF

Number of subzero days: 5

GFS shows no more than a trace of total rain here through at least the next 7 days, nice!

ECMWF shows rain each day for a week beginning late Friday.

Summer lows centered over Northern California should give a good chance to score.

Conspiracy theorists are also connecting chemtrails in with noctilucent clouds. I reply saying what heights they occur at, and that no planes fly at those levels.

Dead silence, or I just get called names.

D8-14 EPS trend since 12z yesterday:

Yeah... pretty clear we are heading into a long-term troughing situation which begins this weekend.     Pretty much what I expected in early July with a Nina developing.

It’s not the GOA black hole/zonal faucet pattern that we saw earlier in the month, though.

It’s actually a fairly run-of-the-mill pattern..much closer to “normal” vs those 2013-18 summers.

Below normal heights and 850mb temps... but not dramatically so.

Speaking of which, it might finally be time to declare that Baffin Vortex/AK-West Coast ridge pattern dead. It redeveloped almost annually every year from 2013 until the winter of 2018/19, which featured that major SSW in Jan/Feb. There’s a growing volume of evidence that these major midwinter SSW events can lead to (or somehow represent) the culmination/inception of multi-year shifts in quasi-equilibrative modes within the ocean/atmosphere system.

This summer has been the reverse of that Baffin Vortex/+TNH pattern, and last summer never fully got there either. Now there’s a big ridge over NE-Canada with troughing over the West Coast/AK.

Much more analogous to 2008-12.

Late December snow and a white Christmas is what we need.

It'll happen down here in the south valley again at some point, too. It all flips one day. I had gone some 5 years without experiencing a 4"+ snowstorm and then 2-25-19 happened.

Up to 90F. First of the year for Springfield and subsequently the hottest day of the year to this point.

Hillsboro is at 93 already. Humidity is not all that low either with a DP of 63.

So heat and snow, ok. Anything else back to donut hole. ;)

Mainly NW flow gets donut holed here. HIO averages drier in spring and summer than PDX, but actually slightly wetter in winter when most of the rain comes from SW flow.

NW flow winter months usually end up drier, though (see Jan 2013).

As far as t-storms and snow... bad luck comes in streaks and we’re in one.

Definitely the flip of a switch at times. Some years only a couple thunders occur more than 1 year in a row, other times groupings like 2008-2009 I record 7-8 t'storms in Hillsboro 2 years back to back.

2003-2004 was another nice group of years for thunderstorms there.

Looking back at my notes, wow in 2003 I wrote down 11 thunderstorms in Bethany (almost my current annual average here!).

Strangely only 2 the next year, but a really nice one happened on 06/18/2004.

8 in 2008 and 8 in 2009, two most active years in a row when I lived in Hillsboro.
