June 2020 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

It’d be nice to get a few summers closer to climo like last summer was. Maybe last summer and this summer are the beginning of a change to more normal summers after the 2013-2018 period of hot ones.

Seems that way.

I love how the choice always has to be between one extreme or the other... 54 and rain or extreme heat and humidity. Neither of which are normal summer weather in the PNW. That is a common approach by our fellow swamp-dweller in DC.

Yet... if it was sunny and 75 then everyone on here would be raving how about beautiful it is.

Last summer was nice in the way we had periods of 80-85 for weeks straight, and it was uncommon to have more than a couple 90's in a row.

We both know you love extreme heat.

Nothing wrong with that. I obviously don’t share your perspective, but there’s no sin in it.

Strawman... you like to have something to argue about.

When in fact we would both love 75 and sunny all summer. :)

I just said it was a choice between two extremes... neither of which are normal summer weather in the PNW.

Nice personal attack though!   I have said there is nothing too unusual about this June.    Does not mean I love it... but I recognize that its normal.    Personal preferences are meaningless of course.

I am sure your post will get Jesse all excited because he wants to pretend I have no idea what is normal here.

I am the one that likes extreme heat but only for a few days and mainly since I like extreme weather events that rarely happen around here. You can keep your summer long humid heat crap.

Nobody’s preferences have changed all of these years...you would think everyone would have a good grasp on it by now but apparently people still think that you and I like and will only accept a climate like Arizona. It’s getting kind of old.

Debate for the sake of debate... recycled thousands of times.

We all know what is normal and we all know the weather we like... sometimes they are not the same.    That's life.

It was not meant to be a personal attack but if you think it was too personal, I've deleted it.

I'll try to rephrase my point: By this time of year, most people are ready for daily "75 and sunny" but instead June gives us overcast with occasional showers, it's a time-honored tradition. I'd go as far to say that one of the quintessential experiences of living in the NW is being ready for nicer weather and June won't give it to you. But few in North Bend are surprised by the annual June Gloom tradition so we get out and enjoy nature in the showers anyways.

I am not surprised by it either.     That was my point.

Don't ask how I know. But Summer 2020 will not be overly anomalously hot like 2014 or 2017.

We could still easily have 1 or 2 decent heat waves though.

High elevations have an equal chance of a nice winter considering mine at my place was exactly normal last winter, despite having one of the record driest February's ever. January was a legit decent one for snowpack.

Not hard to achieve.

I just can't find much optimism for next winter as far as lowland excitement goes... but the mountains rarely ever do poorly in a first year Niña.

12Z EPS is teasing us again with a solid return to anomalously warm and unusually dry/ridgy weather in the 10-15 day period.

Fixed.

Heat misers are gonna love June 20th to 30th.

Favorable intraseasonal state for warmth/ridging around that timeframe, similar to 2016.

Santa Ana winds here. Very unusual for June.

June is not really that cloudy of a month on average, even traditionally. And there have been a TON of warm, dry, sunny Junes since 2012. Not to mention warm and sunny late springs.

The "cool, cloudy, showery" June so often described on here is a bit overstated, I think. Keep in mind I lived in the PNW for 25 years and have studied the climate obsessively.

Your PA evenings must have cooled off better than mine.

The nastiest dewpoints here are in the 5-10pm window, after the lee trough forms and shifts winds to southerly w/ the bay/sea breeze. I’m with you on the thunderstorms, though.

Without thunderstorms no real exiting weather happens in Florida except for the occasional hurricane or tropical storm. I still remember Hurricane Andrew. I thought I wasn’t going to make it.

Yeah, a while back Mark posted a nice map of average yearly rainfall totals for PDX Metro. Around Hillsboro is one of the driest spots in the area.

"The driest parts of the metro area are in the lowest elevations in the Tualatin Valley and along the Columbia River from Vancouver Lake to NE Portland. That includes the Hillsboro, Portland, and Vancouver airports. These areas typically average less than 38″ of rain each year. Another dry spot, although not quite as dry, is the northern Willamette Valley south of Wilsonville."

pdx_rain_map_bpa.jpg

https://fox12weather.wordpress.com/2015/09/06/a-neat-old-metro-rainfall-map/

Fort Lauderdale and Miami average about 62 inches of rain a year so good to see some areas get that much and even more. Strong rain shadow for Hillsboro, not as extreme as the Olympic rain shadow but it’s evident. Omega why don’t you move already? Move to Washougal and you get 2 feet of more rain a year hehheh
