June 2020 Weather Discussion for the PNW

all that rain, ongoing cool weather, and no reduction in drought status? That doesn't seem right.

I think it takes into account precip anomalies over the last few months and not just recent conditions.

I see the retrogression of the ridge you were talking about heh

It’s a difficult pattern progression for model guidance. The entire process is seeded via the East-Asia conduit(s). We see during the winter how models mishandle wavetrains emanating from there, and it’s no different here (although the nature of the governing dynamics is different at this time of year).

Though IMO, the GFS is almost certainly too quick/clean w/ the discontinuous retrogression of the anticyclone, in this particular case, even if it’s a fair depiction of the general tendency during late June/early July. I think pattern/forcing analogs will trump dynamic model guidance re: predictability this time.

Based on the color of my lawn we are not in a drought but my wife makes me water it when it hasn’t rained in a while so it’s almost always green heh

I’m use to rainfall being spread out evenly throughout the year being from Florida. So can we get out of this drought before the Fall?

Where in FL did you live? Because there’s a fairly distinct summer precipitation max on the peninsula, at least.

Most locations in the SE have a summer precipitation maximum. Even up here there’s a statistically significant annual maximum in the May-Aug timeframe (more so recently, wasn’t as stark before 1997/98).

My 3rd thunder landing on June 10th is a tad late looking back at some of my notes. It's not always a bad thing I suppose, in 2017 I didn't have my 3rd until 06/19, and that summer had a few of the best local storms in several years later in July and August. (Shockingly my first thunder was June 8th in 2017, and my average first is in April!)

It sounds like you’ve been here for well over a decade though. Didn’t you mention you moved here right after December 2008?

I think the large scale precip deficits for the water year to date (since 10/1/19) is weighted heavily on that map. The May and June rain has probably helped a lot in the short term even if the background state is still on the dry side.

Now we just need to hope we don’t completely dry out and roast the next 2-3 months and dry out all the lush late spring vegetation, which could pave the way for a bad fire season.

A cold October and a bone dry February will definitely do that to drought maps. The storms in January in the mountains almost didn't even matter.

Fort Lauderdale area. They get on average at least around 3 inches of rain a month. Summers do get more rain, tropical storms/hurricanes always seems to skew the averages higher in those months. In the northwest, it’s distinctly drier in the summer compared to the rest of the year.

True story they were actually going to build an eight lane Mt. Hood Freeway from downtown Portland through SE PDX to Mt. Hood. They actually started on the project and to this day you can still see the remants of that freeway with how unique Powell Blvd looks in SE PDX.

"The biggest of all was called the Mount Hood Freeway, an eight-lane ribbon that would have peeled off the Marquam Bridge, and run east in a 40-foot-deep trench where Southeast Clinton Street is now, cutting down to Powell Boulevard and running beyond I-205."

Thunder confirmed. Storms for now don't look very promising.

It's maybe every 3 minutes I hear rumbling.

59/54 at HIO today, about as bad as it gets for this time of year. In fact, today ties with 1943 for coldest high on record for June 12.

Medford had a midnight high today and was reporting 58ºF at 4 PM.

I-5 in southern OR had a near constant stream of showers. Last 2 days they've been scoring more than the east sides.
