The 12z ECMWF shows a nice soaker of a system next Saturday:

Meh. I’m getting out of here. Heading up to the Cariboo. Talked to my mom the other day it was 48F with heavy rain. I think they ended up with around 1.5” of rain that day at our cabin.

I saw a report it was snowing up on whistler mountain today.

Be nice if we could skip our normally dreadfully hot summer.    70s are brutal.

Pretty impressive how every single high temp is underperforming. Hopefully we can have a trend like that this winter.

71 at PDX.

So impressive. Only one of the last seven months have even been technically below average at PDX (March). We just keep underperforming. Wonder when this cold stretch will end.

Is anyone else surprised at how little clearing western WA has gotten recently despite the thoughy pattern? A summer trough can often bring decent weather here despite the cooler temps. However, we have not seen the sun at all since Monday and I am not optimistic about much clearing next week after Sunday. Is there something specific about this particularly troughy pattern that just sucks for WA?

There's still a prevailing sense around here that the last six or seven years is in fact our warm season climo and not something of an aberration (mired within the bigger picture of climate change).  Perspective is always key.

I’ve gotta remind myself the person I just responded to was probably between kindergarten and first grade the last time we had this “cool” of a start to July.

Yeah, probably not a great recollection of summers like 2010 or 2011.

And our last truly significantly cold midsummer (July 1993) was long before his time and also long before North Bend, WA was really on the map.

Thanks, that was helpful! Just seems like recently, western WA needs to rely on ridging to get summer sunshine while OR can score nice days in a troughy pattern. I would love it if we could score sub-70 July highs will wall to wall sunshine but that seems doubtful. I know the clouds are worse here in the foothills too compared to areas further west.

While we're voicing weather complaints-- perhaps this'll be the year for another windstorm in the Willamette Valley. Our highest gust last year was in fact from an easterly wind event-- of course, those are always a treat as well. With the extra time and the pandemic allowing, I'll hopefully go up to Crown Point this winter when I have a little time off.

That would be wonderful.

I was actually wondering the same thing. It has been a long time since I have seen conditions like this during June. Typically we see a lot of marine pushes/June Gloom with cloud cover and mist until some clearing later in the afternoon. This last week has been more dynamic with wind and rain every day but then turns into just low cloud cover and wind in the afternoon without any clearing.

Yeah, definitely a strange pattern. Weird to have this many days in June / July without any clearing. Hopefully we’re just taking our medicine now and we’ll see a decent second half of summer.

I remember that month. It’s starting to feel eerily familiar.

Down here it has more of a July 2012 vibe.

Good Lord... time to get the hell out of here on the 00Z GFS. This is getting seriously depressing. Too much.

Hard to go so long with almost no sun in the summer.
