June (July) 2020 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

Still dark and spitting here.

I was being very optimistic in my description.  Some think it's unwarranted negativity if you point out that it's dark and damp.  It's actually drizzling here and quite dark.  Not as cool as yesterday though.  Tomorrow's sunshine chances not looking too great but hoping for some Sunday.

12Z ECMWF shows highs in the mid to upper 50s next weekend with copious rain.  Exactly normal for mid July.   Makes sense since we have a total of zero sunny weekends since May.

Pendulum swinging back after 2013-18.

Indeed.

I did not much care for the smoky summers of 2015, 2017, and 2018 either. Too extreme the other way.

This summer just happens to feature subsidence right over the West-Pacific warm pool as a low pass feature. Pretty much the perfect regime for western troughing during the warm season, all else being equal.

2013-18 (minus 2016) was essentially the inverse. Lots of convection/upper level divergence over the WPAC. So pretty much everything about that stretch is reversing right now.

The 12z EPS swung pretty significantly in the colder direction over the PNW region in the medium-long range. For whatever it’s worth.

I’d rather have a summer with a bad case of the drizzles than a smoke-fest. I don’t think there is any summer weather pattern I dislike more than smoke.

Great.

I would rather not have either.

64 and cloudy. 0.03” of rain this morning. Had the septic pumped today, the guy said it seemed like it rains every weekend now. I said thanks for the observation TIM.

Looks like the Portland area could make a solid run at 80 on Sunday.

My area might make a run at 59!!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

July has been consistent though.  The only inconsistency is that July started out as June but then again they both start with “J”

There hasn't been one warm day without crazy wind so far this year. Getting gusts 20-25 this afternoon.

At least I can take a trip to Okanogan County and get some warmth and sun with this pattern. When it gets smoky, there is no escape: it typically affects both sides of the Cascades.

Very true.

When I went to buy my fireworks the other day they were sold out of the ones I wanted so I had to go to another stand. Turns out firework sales are through the roof right now and the best they have ever been in history due to the Coronavirus. All the public firework shows are cancelled so people are buying extra fireworks this year. I'm expecting tomorrow night to be wild and the loudest it's ever been in my neighborhood for an Independence Day.

I just bought my Arsenal outside of Cheyenne, WY.

There was no shortage in that store!

Today is literally November 3.

Ironically you described a very similar day in Bellingham on 7/2/2012 as being "awful" and as bad as it gets in July. Its easy to sit in 71 degree sun and mock those who have had 50s and low 60s and rain for most of the last week and who are not so happy about it.

Got any Thanksgiving plans later this month?
