Really disappointed in Fred for adding names to the emojis. Was a lot more fun to anonymously troll or dogpile on people. I don't want Tim to know I'm downvoting his completely innocuous post I'd rather him think it was a mortal enemy.

I'll probably turn them off.

Fun fact, there is a MySQL query that gets ran for every user to tabulate a top score for the built in reputation system. Some of the downvotes Tim got made this squish the compute shape I had setup. So I have been playing around with fixing it and it came down to just reseting Tim. I am probably going to just reset everyone at the beginning of the year.

To think of it, this fact was not fun.

Zero reason to turn it off, if someone is bothered by it they can avoid the forums and be alone in their parents basement.

Got down to 52F. We shall see if we get down into the 40s. If not then we are looking at a double-digit to +15F departure.

Thanks for the great intel soldier.

I read this last night and I flew into a fit of rage. Drove up to lake LaCamas and fired a few shots into its depths. It will think twice before downvoting me again.

Big changes on the EPS last night.  It now has a clear negative PNA signal for week two.

Dropped to 47 this morning and now thick fog and 50.  Amazing how differently 850s of +20 can play out in late Sept vs late August.

PDX is on the verge of setting their warmest average September MIN on record for this month. That has actually played a large role in boosting this month to top warm status.

4 of the 5 warmest average September MINs on record at that location have now been 2013-present.

Yeah....I was going to say the month hasn't seemed THAT warm, but some places will crush their monthly average temp records.  The mild mins have played a huge role.

A strong trade surge is predicted to take place in the coming 1-2 weeks over the central Pacific. Easterly anomalies in the lower troposphere to exceed 8m/s!

Strong first year Ninas have a history of delivering wicked cold snaps during the cold season.  Right off the top of my head...

1942-43 - Top tier January blast

1988-89 - Top tier February blast

1998-99 - Top tier December blast

2010-11 - Top tier November blast and top tier late winter blast

On any given night that isn't completely mixed out, I'll be 3º to 6º warmer than valley locations. The record differential was 20º on 12/8/13 (-10ºF at EUG; +10ºF here)

It turns out 1949-50 was also a strong first year Nina as well as 1970-71.  Those added to the ones I listed earlier is a really good group.

Glad we got all that rain before the long dry spell. This month has been a very very interesting month...very hot and dry first 1/3 of the month with a once or twice a century East wind event. Then heavy thick smoke the 2/3 of the month that brought significant cold anomalies and altered the leaf changing process. Then a wet and stormy final 1/3 Of the month with a nice sunny last couple days. Unlike anything I’ve seen.

1886-87 (had forgotten this was actually a Nina), 1889-90, 1892-93, 1916-17,  1949-50, and 1973-74 were all higher end 1st year Ninas as well.

2007-08 was as well and of course was mostly garbage but the 500mb pattern at least favored troughing. And April 18-20, 2008 would have been a legit top tier blast in the middle of winter.

In case anyone was wondering what the strongest La Nina on record is, 3.4 data suggests that 1889-90 has a pretty good case although data from back then is obviously less reliable. January 1890 peaked with a -2.49C anomaly in the central equatorial region.

https://psl.noaa.gov/gcos_wgsp/Timeseries/Data/nino34.long.anom.data

1889-90 also has a case for being our best post-1862 winter. Consistent shots of arctic air throughout and a ton of snow. Downtown Portland had 41.6" and St. Helens, OR recorded 69" that winter at sea level.
