Strong first year Ninas have a history of delivering wicked cold snaps during the cold season.  Right off the top of my head...

1942-43 - Top tier January blast

1988-89 - Top tier February blast

1998-99 - Top tier December blast

2010-11 - Top tier November blast and top tier late winter blast

Even though December 1998 produced widspread highs in the low 20s for the lowlands, some on here have argued that this wasn't actually top tier.

I remember it. It was a potent but all too quick-hitting blast. It was fun while it lasted.

1886-87 (had forgotten this was actually a Nina), 1889-90, 1892-93, 1916-17,  1949-50, and 1973-74 were all higher end 1st year Ninas as well.

2007-08 was as well and of course was mostly garbage but the 500mb pattern at least favored troughing. And April 18-20, 2008 would have been a legit top tier blast in the middle of winter.

2007-08 was absolutely epic above 1000' and on the east side. Spokane had their snowiest winter on record, only to be topped the following winter.

And wholly unimpressive for cold, aside from the spring airmasses. Jim's post mentioned major arctic airmasses in stronger 1st year Ninas, and 2007-08 stands out very negatively there. It didn't even manage a <36F high at PDX or SEA.

Even a disappointment such as 1973-74 still produced a top-tier backdoor arctic airmass.

Both of the new northern CA fires have exploded in size overnight. The Glass Fire in Sonoma and Napa is now at 37k acres and the Zogg Fire SW of Redding is at 40k. Both of those fires are at 0% containment.

August Complex is at 938k acres spanning seven counties and 43% containment.
