Up to 71F after a low of 49F. Mostly cloudy and nice clean air. Dry enough for the kiddos to be outside too.

The EPS did show the cooler and wetter period coming up quite awhile ago.   And then showed another ridge building.   I actually showed those maps.

For sure. I was just looking through some photos of mine and it looks like at least a few inches out on the west side as well. In 2017 I think I got about 12" in Goose Hollow but west side totals were lower as I recall - I think pdx airport only recorded like 7"

Hell of an event. 17” or so here— and it stuck around for the better part of a week too.

The CPC forecast for this winter has a nice look to it.  Cold anomalies limited to the northern tier west of the Great Lakes.  That anomaly profile is good for snow from northern OR northward.

By the way, does anyone know of a good source for historical weather observations going back as far as possible (at least until 1930)? At least daily, and preferably hourly. Big plus if I can see a month's worth of daily max/min readings at once.

You are in for a treat if you haven't seen this stuff before.  Daily obs for many stations.  Some go back well before 1930.

70/57 here today. Pleasant temps, clean air, and some moderate showers about an hour before sunset to wet everything down. Pretty nice day.

Partly cloudy and 60 currently.

There is some early hinting in the models we may see a big ridge in about a week which might be followed by a sharp pattern reversal with a GOA ridge and cold Western trough as we get into October.

Yeah. Today felt very refreshing. Looking forward to some good rains later next week to really deliver the death knell to fire season. Will make any ridgy periods we get later in the fall more pleasant.

Nina cold seasons are often late starters.  As I mentioned in an earlier post there might be an opportunity for a notably cool pattern by sometime in the first week of October.  At that time the GFS is hinting at something and there have been some EPS ensemble members showing tanked PNA as well.

Cold in October is very common before a good Nina winter.  Cold is never a waste.  The period from 1954 - 1957 was almost constantly cold and there was PLENTY for the winters.  Just an example.

I wouldn’t worry too much about what happens in October and November. If the atmospheric configuration tells us anything, the background state for this winter is going to be in our favor. I really don’t see much split flow or SW flow in the cards this time around.

Hopefully this year we get some solid cold in the fall AND winter just to prove you wrong. ;) And that our very best winters often have plenty of cold to go around.

You’re exactly right! So I’ve actually stopped smoking this past week due to the poor air quality... it was triggering my asthma real bad and it wasn’t pleasant at all! May make it a permanent thing. :)

I’ve enjoyed being proven wrong on here before. Didn’t think over a foot could fall here for a long-as$ time and then 2-25-19 happened. Just waiting for another elusive white Christmas and/or epic January event.
