August 2023 Weather in the PNW

Recommended Posts

SEA needs 12 more days at 80+ to dethrone 2015 (51).    That might be a little tougher to do.

2023 is currently 12th on that list as well.    One interesting year in the top 10 is 1961 with 45 days at 80+.   8 of the top 12 are from the last decade.    The other years include 1958, 1961, 1967, and 1987.    2023 will pass up 1987 and 2013 this weekend and move into the top 10.

And another year with a month’s worth of 90F burgers rolls on.

Looking at OLM, the top year for 85+ days is 1958. Number two is 1967. 2015 comes in third. 2023 is currently 15th.

For 80+, it's very similar except 1967 is ahead of 1958. 2023 is currently 16 behind 1967, which had 65 80+ days.

This is what the 12Z Canadian smoke model showed for late this afternoon... seems to be overdone in my area as there is almost no visible smoke out here but maybe underdone up north based on reports from SW BC.    Seems pretty accurate in western OR.    It shows the next two afternoons being similar to today... hopefully that is true in my area.

I mean AQI is close to 100 in much of the Sound right now and you can't see the foothills really from the Space Needle so I'd say it's not exactly overdone. But I could agree it's underdone up here. I'm in the Upper Skagit currently and it's toxic out there.

I have certainly seen much worse in Seattle... even in the last week.    This would be a perfectly tolerable amount of smoke for the weekend.   It did not have any impact on temps either.

Looks like it won't matter which direction the wind is blowing. Eugene is gonna be surrounded by fires in all directions. The system next week really needs to provide some juice.

You may get some but the models are currently quite consistent in saying most of the juice heads north of you.

This is the fuckking darkest timeline. I can't even see the Coburg Hills and the AQI is getting close to 200ppm again. Burning eyes, smoke inside the house. Makes my head hurt so bad.

Any offshore flow would exacerbate things, we want weak onshore flow and of course rain. The situation down in Oregon could get very bad with any strong offshore flow.

If we get a strong offshore push, it will be an inferno from the cascades to the coast. These fires aren't going out until some soaking rains happen.

It used to rain a bit during the summer. That's the biggest problem. Essentially no rain from June to October is a big problem. More so than the heat.

Hotter and drier go hand in hand around here, in the warm season.

I was hoping with this summer being an El Niño it might resemble 2019. Im not sure a year like 2011 could happen again…but years like 2019 are probably the best we can hope for nowadays.

Agreed... today reminded me of a Minnesota summer day.    Dark/rainy and sunny/warm in the same day and just an hour apart.

I was looking at the 18Z GFS and something looked a little familiar. I downloaded the 500 mb height anomaly and 850 mb temperature anomaly. Around the 129 hour, it starts looking like an Omega Ridge like we see during the winter time. You can see low pressure system riding over the ridge like the winter time. If this verifies, there's a chance this ridge could stick around for awhile. That's only if it verifies.
