October 2023 Weather in the PNW

Recommended Posts

EUG at 54 with 15mph SE winds. We are at 5mph SE winds here and brilliant sunshine with a few clouds around but otherwise it feels pretty similar to yesterday so we should hopefully see another below normal temp departure day.

I know it poo poo'd to say it around here, but we haven't even had a freeze this year yet and the ground temps are still in the 50s, or at least they were yesterday

It'll happen in the next few days. We should be getting some 2-3 freezes in the Willamette Valley over the weekend.

Sorry i meant Washingtons passes, I've never been over any of those and have only been to Oregon a couple times so i have no idea where those even are. Major passes in Washington did not get near as much forecasted.

Forgot to mention, managed to get a great view of the annular eclipse from Mary’s Peak west of Corvallis a couple weeks ago. The weather forecast was pretty touch and go that day. Got really lucky with a thin spot in the clouds that persisted for a little while. Was able to see the ring of sun around the moon just with a pair of polarized sunglasses, and witnesses most of the moon’s transit. No great pics of the eclipse itself, but these show the weather conditions at least.

Lucky you. I'm still chapped my wife insisted on going to Boston, which IMO is MEH at best. The six hour flight with a barfing 19 month old was less than ideal too.

It blows my mind how many of the Washington posters on here have never been to Oregon, or hardly even go to Oregon. Washington is great, don't get me wrong, I was there last Tuesday, but y'all should really get out more.

From the looks of it this was a bust for the passes, not much snowfall so far.

The bust at Snoqualmie Pass is pretty funny. NWS Seattle still has a winter storm warning in effect there despite there being bare grass and a temperature of 39 degrees. At one point they were forecasting something like 12-18 inches of snow for the passes LOL. The snow level only briefly went below 3,000 ft, it was at 3,500 ft for most of the event.

Stevens got 7 inches so that one didn't bust quite as badly.

I think it's just inexperienced forecasters blindly going with the NBM, they tend to get better as the season goes on. The HRRR had backed Snoqualmie down to like 2-4 inches yesterday morning before the precip started. Which makes sense because a major snowstorm at Snoqualmie would be virtually unheard of in October.

I've lived out here for 10 years and I think I've been to Oregon maybe 6 or 7 times. I like it, it's just too far away. I've never gone past Portland on I-5, I'm taking a plane if it's a longer drive than 3 hours.

Astoria, Seaside, and Cannon Beach are true gems to go to. Last went there maybe 3 years ago with the fam and I fully intend on coming back, this time by myself.

Life happens for people I guess, but for me it would be very difficult to imagine as long as I'm in the PNW not taking semi-frequent trips around the region. I feel like OR/WA/southern BC are so interconnected and easy to navigate between.

If I can’t fly there first class then have a vehicle of some sort haul me from the plane to the location in under 30 minutes, it’s not worth seeing.

Funny, I've driven to the coast and back, Rainier and back in a day.  Just have to get out.  After my stroke, just a reminder that you never know.

Meanwhile, pouring rain here at home and down to 43, my low for the day.  0.91" yesterday and up to 0.63" for today.

Bellingham and back is the record for me in my more adventurous era. Had to sign a lease up there and be back in Vancouver the next morning.

Long story why (9/11 was a big factor) but a friend of mine and I did Seattle to Salt Lake City and back in one shot, sharing the driving. We were there for all of about 45 minutes.

My sons did Boise and back in one day to pick up a car... and that meant both had to be driving on the 8 hour trip back.
