October 2023 Weather in the PNW

Recommended Posts

Crystal clear here now.  Should be a solid freeze tonight.  Ended up shovelling the driveway cause it wasn’t going to Melt out before it likely freezes tonight.  We had over 3” of liquid fall yesterday and there is still some snow melting out of the gauge.  Would have likely been a monster snow storm later in winter.  Possibly 20-30”+

It had melted a fair bit by sunrise.  We ended up with 4”.  Lots of tree damage on the deciduous trees.  Power, internet, cable, and cell phones have been down most of the day here.  Seems like things are coming back online now.

Overnight melting like that is a classic sign of a snow event caused by heavy precip dragging the freezing level down.

It's called clown range for a reason.

Heavy rain and some rumbles of thunder. Temp dropped to 42 with this line of showers, which is the new low for the day. Even saw a few positive splats on the windshield pulling in. Picked up a quick 1/3” and it’s still coming down.

48/42 spread here so far. First sub-50 high since 4/20.

This winter is going to be epic from Everett north! Also the Kitsap peninsula along with a line from Cle Elum to Spokane and north!

It blows my mind how many of the Washington posters on here have never been to Oregon, or hardly even go to Oregon. Washington is great, don't get me wrong, I was there last Tuesday, but y'all should really get out more.

As someone who's been there like eight times in the last 3 years, hard agree.

I was in Oregon a year ago! Before that it had only been about 36 years since I was there.

Always blew my mind in Seattle when I ran into people who had never been to Portland or Vancouver (this was pre-9/11, when you didn’t need a passport to visit Canada). Within my first year in the Pacific Northwest, I had visited all three of Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver.

I'd think about it now that I can pump my own gas there.

Seriously though, I did my time in Oregon, lived there from '94 to '02.  I made some good friends while I lived there, but really don't have much desire to go back except for maybe the Oregon Coast.

Now that they will no longer be forced to watch someone else pump their gas, this should change.

Just saw this on Hurricane Otis....

A collective "OOPS! My BAD!" from all of the weather models.

That is insane! Why can’t we ever get an epic regional monster arctic blast with 2’ of snow for everyone when the forecast called for a slushy mix for anyone below 1,000ft?
The only time I remember anything even remotely happening like that was in December 1996.

Last time something like that happened here was back in 2000 or 2001. Forecast was for 1-2” of slop followed by sunshine and melting, and we ended up with over a foot with blowing and drifting into the night.

School buses picked us up that morning as snow started falling. By 11AM there was 6” on the ground and they closed the school. Bus ride back was nerve wracking but fun. By the time we got home, 9” had fallen, and the wind had started to roar, kicking up clouds of snow from the ground and roofs. Ahh, the nostalgia.

One downside of todays model precision is surprises like that are much less frequent. But so are surprise busts, so I guess it evens out.
