We could use a break from the rain but unfortunately it appears Mother Nature has other plans.

We have been at almost 180% of normal precip over the past two weeks, with 4.09 in the bucket for the month so far. Normal June rainfall is 4.23. We are looking at another 2-3 inches of rain by Saturday and the pattern doesn't look to slow down anytime soon. Thunderstorm/rainfall trajectory will certainly change as the ridge moves from the Mid-Atlantic/NE to the southern Plains but regardless, the faucet will not turn off as we remain on the periphery of the ridge.

We have an aunt from WA visiting for the next week. We told her prior to coming that it's often sunny and warm here in the summer and how much we love it. So of course it's raining almost the whole time she's here, because that's just how things work! 😑

PHX should top out near 114F today and I'm hoping to get some storms to bubble up and feel some outflows today.  Just took a look at my local grid and this is quite interesting to say the least on this Summer Solstice day!

We got poured on in the early morning hours today.  We needed some rain too, so it was welcome, but it was heavy.  I had 2.2" in my gauge.  I see reports in the area in that neighborhood, even up to over 3" in spots.

Had been doing relatively ok here with frequent rains until recently.  Just starting to see the heat and less rain taking a toll with unwatered lawns not looking so vibrant green and some brown creeping in.

We were blessed with wonderful downpours late last night and this morning! Ended up with 1.62" after a 2-week dry spell. I was awakened from a deep sleep to heavy rain after giving up hope of anything much last evening. Some places had a lot more of course, but many much less too. Had some thunder at times. The last very heavy cell that was headed right for me around 2 hours ago, died out at the last second with nothing much here. Nearly ended up with another inch.

Iowa Great Lakes/Okoboji is going to be in a really bad situation if the next 48-hour forecasts for 3"+ verify. Are there any chances the heavy stuff goes somewhere else, @hawkstwelve?

I think the axis of heaviest precip over the next 48 hours will be just to your NNW. The NBM (primary model NWS uses) shows 2-3 inches for your backyard versus 3-4+ inches over eastern SD. I know from the pictures you posted a bit ago that even 2-3 inches of rain is still too much for you guys down there but thankfully you don't appear to be in the bullseye this time around.

nbm-conus-dakotas-total_precip_inch-9079200.png

Unfortunately, precip chances look to continue for the foreseeable future. There will be dry days mixed in here and there but for the most part we look to remain in the stormy/wet corridor for a while. Only difference will be instead of storms moving in from the SW I think the reorientation of the ridge will make storms start moving in from the NNW. That trajectory change might help PWATs be slightly lower and will probably lead to more isolated, convective-based rain (especially from MCSs) than the broad base rainfalls we have seen more of lately. But otherwise, I'm seeing no prolonged dry spells that we could use in order to wring out a bit, at least over the next two weeks. Maybe if we can hang in there until the 2nd week of July we can get the ridge to flex a bit northward and dry us out. Positive thoughts!

It’s a 104F with a 57DP…it’s freaking hot…

We'd be calling that a dry heat if it were happening in the Midwest.  But I imagine it feels a bit muggy to the native Arizonans!

💯 and it’s supposed to get into mid 60’s dewpoint this weekend…you can feel it in the air and reminds me of the weather back in the Midwest.

Lots of rumbling to my south as scattered smallish, but heavy cells approach. There was only a 20% chance of storms.

It's "fitting" that the hottest day of the year falls on the summer solstice!  Torching boys!

The DP is a little lower at sky Harbor…

Nice storms are firing up to my east as expected….the visibility kinda stinks bc of the dust that blew into the valley and I think some smoke from the fires 🔥

I've received some decent rain this morning, about 0.60", which is nice and needed, but much heavier rain has fallen just to my south.  Bud's old town, Tiffin, is near 3", with more on the way.  Many other locations between the CR airport and Iowa city have received 1-2+".

You cant make this stuff  up!!!!!

Missed to west, east  and north past 30 hours.  Exactly  the same since  may 26th.

Mby June: .25" (lowest in Iowa)

OTM June: .19"

Mby May 26th thru June 20th:  .38" (lowest in 6 states that I could find!!!)

No surprise  really this a extremely  recurring  theme since 2012. BUT WHY??????

And interestingly the only spot drier than mby is OTM (Ottumwa  Airport) the usual  low number  from that gage.

One of the many reasons I dislike Arizona.  My husband knows he’ll bury me before I leave Texas.  We’re humid, hot, etc. but at least we’re green and get a good deal more rain!

I can visit but that’s the line for me.  You can have my share, Tom!

A few little cells were moving north and northeast through the area this evening, but they had just about died out before reaching Cedar Rapids.  At the last minute, a heavy cell blew up right over Cedar Rapids and dropped a quick 0.43" here, boosting my daily total to 1.16".  That was pretty darn lucky.

We just got put under a Flash Food Warning. Going to have to look up later and see when the last one of those was issued for Sioux Falls. It's been absolutely dumping here. We've picked up .13 inches of rain over the past thirteen minutes since midnight after getting almost 2 inches yesterday. Our sump pump is working overtime.

3 AM. Thunder, lightning and I can't sleep. So much rain, wow. And I'm not in the worst of it yet, with 24 hours plus yet to go. Prayers for SD, NE, MN and IA.

The official H/L yesterday at Grand Rapids was 89/71 there was 0.30” of rainfall the highest wind guest was 37 MPH out of the N. There was 64% of possible sunshine. For today the average H/L is 81/60 the record high of 98 was set in 1988 the coldest high of 60 was set in 1902 the record low of 40 was set in 1969 the warmest low of 70 was set in 2011 and 1923 the most rainfall of 3.36” fell in 1914.

While there was 0.30” of rain at the airport here in MBY I only had 0.02” of rain as the storms were to the east of here. The overnight low in MBY was 70 and at the current time it is 71 with a DP of 68 with cloudy skies.

There is an increasing chance for storms here tomorrow night and I could use the rain.  PWATs are over 2 inches so very heavy rain could fall if the cap can be broken.

Major flooding on the Mississippi river in Minnesota not seen since 2001.  Higher crest could be possible with additional rainfall.

I'd rather take the Heat and Drier climate than upper 90's and Thick Humid Air.  I just went out on my balcony and we have a good breeze out of the east from all of the decaying overnight storms.  I swear, if I had blinders and stepped outside, I could envision myself being by a large lake or ocean.  It's 92F/65F...its going to take a few days to get acclimated to this different airmass and the heat around here.  Supposed to top 115F again today!

Higher, cooler. Breeze off the mountains are really nice. Some snow in the winter on the mountains.
High, dry air and about 40 mins from Mt. Lemon.👍

Sioux Falls has recorded 6 inches of rain over the past seven days. Our monthly rainfall total now stands at 7.60 which puts us at over three inches above normal, with another 1-3 inches (hopefully not the 4-6+ inches the 12z HRRRR is showing) on the way over the next 24 hours. We do appear to be able to dry out a bit from Saturday afternoon through Monday or possibly even Tuesday. Not long enough to really allow water to recede but we'll take any dry spell we can get at this point.

Here's just the last 72 hours. Some counties just to my south have received 7-8+ inches during this time...

Just the opposite here with a heavy cell weakening right as it's moving in, and that's the second time that happened yesterday and too many times to remember since April. Still got nearly 0.20" from that line while my brother around 7 miles se. got nearly 1". But he only had around three fourth inch earlier yesterday so he almost caught up. Some of the dryer areas of eastern Iowa was in the heaviest band today except for down near @OttumwaSnomow's area. Hopefully he'll score the heavier amounts later Saturday!

BTW, my daily total yesterday is 1.86" which was much needed and appreciated.

96/71 yesterday. Oh did I mention I heard my first cicadas a couple evenings ago? They're so cute the first time you hear them.

There was a t'storm last night with a decent amount of flashing but overall it was a non-severe storm.

Saw the first fireflies the other evening and crickets started in the last week or two. No cicadas yet.

The cicadas are by the trillions I heard back in the Chicago area...my sisters place has piles and piles of them along the tree stumps.  They are soo loud from all the stories I heard.

No cicadas at all here, and I wouldn't expect to see any at this point (at least of the 17 year ones, not talking about annual cicadas).  It's interesting because I've heard that one area can be overrun while the next neighborhood literally has nothing.  Very strange.

This is precisely the case as my cousin lives 20 miles south and he barely sees any cicadas around.  I was read somewhere that NW IL and esp around the west/northwest suburbs of Chicago are pretty much ground zero.  Like you said, some neighborhoods have it bad while others don't.  I'm wondering why that is....I recall, when I was a kid back in the 90's we had it pretty bad one summer.  It had to have been 30+ years ago so within the 34 year (17 * 2) window and I lived in Des Plaines back then.  Maybe those critters still have their main "home" down under the ground and haven't moved much.

I should have some nice storms moving from east to west off the mountains and into most of the "Valley of the Sun" around dinner time tomorrow.  This is going to be the 1st legit widespread Monsoon event of the season for the valley.  I'm pretty sure there will be alerts in place by tomorrow morning.

I read somewhere that northern IL is expecting a huge emergence of cicadas this year, but haven't heard if that actually occurred yet or not.

Nothing extraordinary here yet, but “the night is young!”
Texas has always been cicada country. I loved listening to them in the afternoon.  It was the sound most dear to my heart as it signal freedom from school chores!
