Was cloudy and humid today at the kids soccer games in Marysville today…But dry!
However was pouring between Marysville and home just a few minutes ago. We got lucky!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

72F and muggy out there. Wish there was some lightning here again. Feels like it’s been a long time since I’ve seen some proper fork lightning.

Has anyone ever experienced ball lightning? Apparently it happens high up in supercells and can quickly move thru airplanes and such sometimes.

Literally every other Willamette Valley location was cooler than normal in May. And Cottage Grove is the closest reliable one with a long term record.

Corvallis ran below their long term mean in March. Two other stations south of the valley mentioned by Omegaraptor, Medford and Roseburg, saw below normal months as recently as March. And yet EUG hasn't managed one in over a year...the overall stats around them say they are the outlier.

The TWL effect is strong.

As far as I'm aware lightning is over in an instant, but perhaps there are wonky intricacies to electrical fields I am unaware of. Lightning strikes are extreme, uncontrolled, localized electrical events. If there were anywhere in our natural world where balls of floating electricity or a phenomena of the sort would happen, it would be in the wake of a lightning strike.

If you've ever seen lightning up close and/or in slow motion, you've probably seen the main channel of ignited air contracting into ordered beads of plasma as the whole thing dissipates. My bet is that ball lightning itself does not exist as its own phenomena, but rather when you are close enough to a lightning strike, you're not far away enough to see the ordered channel of dissipating plasma beads in its entire macro scale, but rather instead seeing the one or two individual beads that are right in front of you.

This woild make sense since most ball lightning reports are very close encounters, and the beading phenomena itself is sort of rare, probably reserved for positively charged lightning strikes, adding to the phenomena's obscurity.

Looking forward to the rain tomorrow before the torch. Jealous of you on the west side as it looks like you may get a cooler summer. But be careful what you wish for. All it takes is for an east wind and you'll wish our side of the Cascades gets more rain or an average (for us) summer.

Warm Novembers during a La Niña are definitely good for cold Decembers. 2008 and 2016 are good examples.

That's why I hate cloudy / warm weather.  It never feels refreshing like a 72 degree day with sun can.

Interesting, that's my roommate's favorite. He has photosensitive eyes, so the clouds help, and if he can just wear a t-shirt it's even better. This time of year even the cloudy days are bright.

Ouch.  That storm was absolutely insane.  It went on for 18 hours here.  Some periods of very intense lightning.  Amazingly we also had one of the most spectacular displays I've seen here in August that same year.  It only lasted for about an hour, but WOW!

We'll see if SEA can pull off a one inch 24 hour total from this AR coming up.  That would certainly put it in top tier for this time of year.
