July 2024 In The Pacific Northwest

Recommended Posts

To our Canadian posters: What are you all doing for Canada Day? You get a nice three day weekend and a pleasant one at that before the ridge builds. I have always been a Canadaphile. If the US ever fought a war against Canada I would defect and fight on your side. Probably the only one I'd consider. Not for political reasons, I've always been a major Canadian admirer.

I have Friday off this week but a lot of us have only July 4th off so not a 4 day weekend for everyone.

I think there will be lots of people suspiciously feeling sick on Friday... making it a 4-day weekend.

Half of them seem to be in Whitefish this weekend.  Took >10 mins to clear the traffic lights downtown this afternoon.

If a holiday falls on a Thursday they should automatically make it a 4 day weekend like we do with Thanksgiving!

I'm off for the foreseeable future.  First day of being 'poor' since college.  stocked up on ramen and making casseroles and stuff that will provide lots of leftovers.  need to save $ like no tomorrow.  not sure how long it will take to find work in tech at 50. cheers

We went to Lynn Valley in North Vancouver. Kids loved it. We hadn’t been their prior to us having kids.

We did fight a war prior to Canada existing. In grade 10 social studies we read about the Loyalists. They namely settled in what became the Maritime provinces post-Revolutionary War. But their rationale didn’t resonate with me. I think your Founders were correct in their rebellion against the Crown. My family came to Canada from Europe much later, so I didn’t have any family history with a dog in the fight. Both histories, however, are worth celebrating.

What I admire is your federalism withe separation of powers, a bicameral legislature based on population and a senate with equality of the states. That backbone is simple but brilliant. We adopted the Westminster Parliamentary system. It might be fine for the comparatively tiny UK, but there’s regional chaffing exacerbated by that system in a county this big. Our legislative & executive branches are fused, the prime minister appoints senators, nor does the senate nor any other mechanism attempt to balance regional disparities in population.

I took some time off of the forums, so what happened? Either way hopefully you can get back on your feet soon.

I know this is the wrong forum but gawd my geek psyche still can’t quite grasp this.

Strongest storm ever recorded this far south in the Atlantic…at ANY TIME OF YEAR.

I have a feeling this is going to be a really bad hurricane season. Maybe the costliest on record.

Meanwhile, it's hot everywhere. Except coastal California and one little patch of Montana.

Compared to recent climate averages though, not too bad in the West for Jan-Jun following a Nino.

2015 and 2016 were much warmer.

Perhaps, but a huge part of that is the paths they take. Obviously with more hurricanes you increase the overall odds of some with really damaging paths, but it doesn't always work out that way.

Also, I can't remember where it was but I remember reading an article awhile ago about how really active early seasons don't necessarily translate into the worst or most damaging seasons. I believe the main crux of it was that if you get major hurricanes early on they can cool the waters in those areas through significant upwelling, which then may slow the development of storms later.

The Canada you knew is gone. Doesn’t exist anymore.

That unequivocally was not the case with 2005. That was a historically active early season and then it never really let up.

Yeah, 2005 was crazy in that it had two major hurricanes form the first half of July, two of the strongest on record that early.

However, other seasons like 2020 didn't get their first hurricane until a month later than this year, and yet it ended up tying the record for most hurricanes in a season. From what I can tell looking at years with major hurricanes early in the season, there's not much of a correlation to major hurricanes later on.

The more important correlator seems to be ENSO development. The fact that the Nina seems a bit slow to take off this year may be a factor: https://www.vizzed.com/boards/thread.php?id=104933

I graduated back in March with a BS in CS, haven’t found a tech job since then though I’ve been applying to several positions a week. I’ve taken a bit of a break for now, it’s a depressing numbers game. We’ll get there, man. I gotta do my MS within a few years at this point.

Only thing I got going for me is AmeriCorps in August, the only guys that’s giving me a chance. I do enjoy tutoring/coaching underserved high school students, it’s going to feel rewarding. Gonna be on the lookout for future techies and meteorology nerds!

Prepare for Deweydog to rip you a new one.

I don’t think 50 is a problem as long as you have a skill set that’s in demand. I would view 50 as someone with experience who probably has ten+ years of career left. Most people don’t stay at one company that long anyway so where’s the downside?

It's absolutely absurd how in the year 1954 the temperature at SeaTac never exceeded 80 degrees. Right now, it's been 13 years since the last 90-degree free summer.

Even back then in the frigid fifties, with a cooler world and cooler microclimate at SEA, 1954 was absurd.

Consider that 1951 had 22 80+ days. 1952 had 24, 1953 had 14, 1955 had 8, 1956 had 22, 1957 had 9, and 1958 had 47(!).
