August 2024 PNW weather discussion

Looks like EUG ended up with a 99. It could be upgraded to a Benjamin later. Maximum DP of 66. Beautiful sunset tonight with plenty of smoke aloft. At the surface, the air is fine. Who knows how long that will last though.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that a major catastrophe could unfold in BC. There was a major landslide and the Chilcotin river has been blocked. A lake has formed behind it and it could release a massive flood.

OUCH!

I had a very severe aversion to sunscreen/lotions as a kid, and so I ended up with at least 2 of that level of burn every summer.  After the 2nd time, I tried to stay out of the sun, or my skin would be so tanned/dark it would offer some protection.  I could get really dark....hispanic dark which created an interesting combo since the sun would also turn my dark brown hair into a very dark red courtesy my northern European ancestry.  Growing up in Georgia, that sun was intense, and every possible moment was spent at a pool or other body of water to try and stay cool.

I'm now 52, and I really need to get my sorry a$$ into the dermatologist to start getting routine screenings.

Been several posts about that here today already.

It's called clown range for a reason.

Well I'm a dolt. I missed them. Been away from the forum and scrolled through the last few pages at a too high of rate. Hopefully the dam releases the lake slowly, but I doubt that will happen.

Extremely bad scenario. Fire starts in like Walterville and it’s game over.

Sorry that you have to deal with the smoke today, but you haven’t had it bad at all this summer. Just 100 miles east and there’s been much more smoke and heat.

Of course that was me. I've learned enough about the weather since then so now I'm only a semi-dolt. Anyone can feel free to call me dolt from here on out. It won't bother me a bit.

Just found the following entry in my journal from August 2015:

"Really hope that I'll be able to look back on this summer years hence as having been an extreme anomaly and not as the trend-setter of a new normal."

Oh well...

98 / 65 today.

75 here. DP of 63. Eugene may have gotten warmer over the last couple of decades. The only benefit is that it is much nicer to swim in the lakes and rivers. Nothing else though. 😮‍💨

I hear ya. I was a sun baby and was constantly in the sun as a kid and my 20’s 30’s. I went in 12 years ago to have a mole looked at and they wanted a biopsy that turned out to be melanoma. Thank hod I caught it early as they tend to spider web under the skin when not treated. I now have a huge scar on my back from them cutting it out. It was the size of a mole but to make sure they got it all, they cut about 1/2” deep and 7” long to make sure it was gone.  I use sunscreen sometimes now but not a lot of the time. The sun is actually healthier for you than the docs will tell you. Sunscreens actually have a lot of bad toxins in them. If you’re going to use them stick with the zinc ones. And lotion not spray.

Doctor always tells me, “ there’s no such thing as a healthy tan”.

The models are starting to show a lot of weakness in the ridge over the next couple of weeks with some retrogression and or back digging lows coming down from the north.  Could be much worse.

The Georgia sun does not play nice. It bites. The sun angle is 20-25 degrees higher than Spokane's sun angle.

It's going to be hard to sleep with that burn. Maybe put some aloe vera on it or something.

I had to do that a couple of times when I was much younger.  Now I seem to tan just fine instead of burning as long as I ease into it every year.

Summers have changed here this century.  That change could be part of a cycle.  If so it could go back to being more like the summers we saw 30 years ago.  Remains to be seen.

Try the New Mexico sun some time. Just as far south, but at high elevation, and with a drier, sunnier climate. I’ve burned by spending fifteen minutes in the sun at midday in June in NM.

Models strongly hint at fire weather coming up.  Much lower dew points being indicated for week two.  On the plus side it appears early next week will have a few cooler days.

You never hear much about the Holocene Climate Optimum.  Many locations were actually warmer than present.  Just so much we don't know for all of the freaking out about climate change we are hearing.  We have not seen anything that hasn't happened since the last ice age.

I'm weirdly resistant to sunburns. I hardly ever get them. I do tan pretty good though.
