I expect there will be some judging her performance against Biden's debate performance, whether intentional or not.  If that's the case, then all she has to do is put together complete sentences and not look like she just rolled out of a retirement home and it will be a smashing success.

Agreed of obvious signs of trouble. Or, as some say: there are no more bullets in the chamber to deal with the next shock. Here in Canada, the signs are full on Captain Picard barking to Worf, “Red alert! Shields up!” GDP/capita shows full-on depression and has for a few years, real wage growth is negative, and most importantly the yield curve has been inverted for a couple years. So when GDP figures are reported as nominally positive, the masses throw rotten tomatoes. (The rotten tomato throwing literally did happen to Justin’s daddy when he was PM. Well, there is a Jerry Springer-type debate as to whether Fidel Castro is his daddy). 
 

There is a silver lining.  In Canada you have to renew your mortgage every five years maximum. There’s no locking in a rate/terms longer than that. With the yield curve still inverted, a five-year fixed rate is the sweetest deal. It should be the worst deal under normal circumstances. Our renewal is due in a few months with the opportunity to lock in for another five years at a rate below historical averages. With a shift in the federal political situation here, more inflationary policies will be introduced to in the next few months to keep the federal government from dissolving Parliament. We may be able to time the renewal just right before the next bought of inflation bites us in the backside. 

I think it would be disingenuous to consider early 2022 a recession and to real red meat recessions of the past I’d imagine they’d be offended by it getting the tag. It would take a considerable amount of mental gymnastics to do so based on a fairly myopic view of the economic stew. Mostly it seemed like a partisan momentum grab to try to make an oval peg fit in a round hole.

At the end of the day, the overall economy has been incredibly resilient over the last couple years, despite the fact some of that resilience may turn out to be folly. As you said, credit card debt is through the roof and despite the Fed’s ability to kick the can down the road while accumulating more cans at a geometric rate, the typical consumer doesn’t quite get the same opportunities. This is one of the reasons I’d be shocked if we weren’t in at least a mild recession by this time next year.

As a dad, I can’t help but see this quote as grooming. Creepy that that’s one of their first example as this looks to be directed towards adolescents. Saying that their kids’ virginity is a “social construct” would stir dads to threaten facial reconstruction for those trying to cram that garbage into their kids’ noggins.

Couple things regarding the debate.  There's a scenario where the mics may be unmuted.  Also, Trump won a coin toss and decided to go last in closing statements.

 

The Harris campaign also told CBS News that it was offered assurances that the microphones may be unmuted if there is significant crosstalk between the candidates. A candidate who constantly interrupts their opponent will be warned by the moderator and their comments may be relayed to the audience. And, if the microphones don't pick up the exchanges, a group of reporters who will be in the room would be able to report anything noteworthy.

Realized my son has his football game right during the debate! Doh! We are going to record it and watch it about an hour after it starts. So I won't be here for the live play-by-play but crossing my fingers that Trump can keep his mouth shut and let Kamala bury her own grave with her incoherent, babbling answers to questions on her policies. He just needs to let her unburden what has been and not say anything stupid.

It's a tall ask, I realize, but it's the only hope I got.

As one counterexample, Mexico’s prison population is steadily rising, not declining.

Also, El Salvador has led a huge crackdown on crime that has led to a massive increase in prison population and a steep decline in homicide rates. Some other Latin American countries are copying the “Bukele model”, with mixed results.

The thing I always come back to is that most people, including undocumented immigrants, just want safety and survival for themselves and their families. Most undocumented immigrants aren’t violent criminals, they’re just people like you and me. Some of you might think that’s Pollyanna…whatever, it’s true. 

I totally agree we should vet people who come here. If someone has committed a violent crime they shouldn’t be able to stay. But we can have a zero-tolerance for violence without painting all asylum seekers with the same brush.

I was planning on voting for RFK so my reasoning for voting Trump is because he endorsed him and he promised him a spot in his cabinet where he could further implement some of his policies. Now that RFK is out all the remaining choices are subpar. You are right Trump has a lot of baggage and that’s why I’m having trouble voting for him. The only other candidate I’m considering is West but he even has lots of baggage. I could just not vote but then again voting is important. I’m willing to give Trump a chance to win my vote but he’s going to need to change his style for sure and actually debate with solid principles and just not go for personal attacks.
