We can discuss tropical cyclones worldwide in this thread.

Currently, Typhoon Shanshan is scraping along the western coast of Kyushu as a 90-100 mph typhoon. It’s then forecast to make a sharp right hook, traveling first over the coastal city of Kumamoto and then northeast through Kyushu, Shikoku and Honshū.

Its slow speed threatens to cause significant flooding. Several Japanese car manufacturers have shut down their factories as a precautionary measure during the storm.

Typhoon Yagi is predicted to hit southern China at Cat. 3-4 strength, then northern Vietnam. Looks concerning, though it doesn’t look like there are any large cities on the peninsula it’s supposed to make landfall on (north of Hainan island).

Yagi is looking pretty dangerous, and unusually strong for being west of the Philippines. Two days away from landfall…

Yagi is looking muy preocupante. 150 mph super typhoon bearing down on southern China.

Yagi passed directly over the city of Haikou in Hainan, China, as a Cat 3 or Cat 4. Seems to be the strongest landfall in China since Rammasun in 2014. The storm is now hours away from making landfall in northern Vietnam, likely as a cat 3. This will be the strongest typhoon in a long time to make landfall near the major Vietnamese cities of Haiphong and Hai Long. Yagi will then pass north of Hanoi as it moves inland.

Hopefully these areas aren’t too prone to storm surge.

Not a good situation. Yagi is really powerful for its location in the Gulf of Tonkin. It’s about to make landfall in what seems to be a densely populated river delta.

Some really scary footage from around Ha Long in Vietnam. This is a region that basically never gets typhoons this strong.

Yagi caused a tragic loss of life in Southeast Asia. Early reports suggest that at least 1,000 died and 10,000 people are still missing. This is largely from catastrophic flooding in the country of Myanmar.
